Good call Cat. It's generally a good idea to do things in the proper order, not do em backwards.

Good luck timmo. It would be great if others with those year wagons would call in too. I've heard a lot of good things about Steele rubber and parts.

Thanks. Without step 1 being done well, is there a step 2? I don't think so.

... And to keep Wagons in the replies, I drove the Mercury a bit today. I parked at one place, saw coolant dripping out and went home; I think it was just excess coming out. I also have to check the coolant for how low it can go in temperature before freezing and adjust it accordingly if it needs it; I'd like it to go to at least -15 Farenheit, though a safe zone at -20 or even lower would be nice just to be safe.

I'm also going to have an oil change if I get the opportunity. Come to think of it, can I do it myself? I have the oil but not the filter, yet.

IMO you are over thinking the coolant, Ford 5.0/302 = I gallon new and the rest water, any questions about the rocket science behind the coolant, they guy at the parts store will have the answers. Then for any top ups a 50/50 mix, winter, spring, summer, fall, hurricane, tornado, even locus :rednose:

As for your coolant leak and "I Think"........ find the problem/leak before you go doing anything else. In the morning or cold engine, open the hood and gently with the garden hose wash all the fittings you messed with and make sure you don't flood your distributor. Then drive, once the engine is warm/hot if you have a leak you will see exactly where it's coming from because of the coolant colour.

Thanks, Tedy. I haven't seen any leaks since then but it's good information.

It's normal after driving and getting the coolant up to temperature to need to tighten the hose clamps a little. Check the clamps from time to time for awhile.

    Thanks, I had no idea.

Lately I drained some coolant and added more concentrate. (The freezing point should be lower than -7 Farenheit.)

I would think where you live it should be -20 at least. Auto parts stores often check your antifreeze free or loan a tester. Back in the good ole days us fuel jockeys did it during gasing up.
