Actually, the bag was not for keeping the car cooler. Rather, it would allow just enough water to permeate the canvas that the evaporation would cool the water in the bag so you can have cool drinking water. I think it was called a Desert Cooler.

The evaporator that cooled the car was a "swamp cooler" that was a metal device that hung off of one of the windows.

I've got one around here somewhere and I could take a picture of it hanging of of our '55 wagon if you'd like.

We still use them in Australia to supply a cold drink when driving 'outback' . With todays SUV's coming with built in fridges here you dont see them much but once you get into the bush,it seems everyone has the water bag hanging off the car. You can buy them at most farm supply places here. As the air passes over the bag,the water film evaporates off the outside and cools the water,a lot.

Not sure what's going on there. Doesn't it look like the Chevy's in a ditch?

Those Hershey School lengthened wagons have been on here before. I'm sort of curious as to why they chose to pay pretty good money to buy all those extended wagons, instead of simply buying small buses. This was in the early 60's, so Chevy Suburban's would have been out - only 2 doors up until '67.

International Harvester was making 4-door Travelalls back to 1960 or so, so maybe some of those (9-passenger) would have worked.

I dunno - just seems to me like an odd choice of vehicle to use for school transportation. (Is this a prep school w/ dorms?)

Speculation on my part - but perhaps a deal struck with a former student now in the auto business? I noticed some Ponchos and Chevy's. Was there anything else?

I can't help but think that who ever the salesman was he was one happy guy that year.
