How about a real-wood trimmed old VW Bus? With real wood veneer on the sides? hmmm. She'd be so busy polishing wood, that she wouldn't dream up Family Transit!

The VW and Air-cooled vehicle motherlode of global links. http://www.allaircooled.com/ Who knows, I may just score a shell up here and register the horn. Found one site where one of the guys who built McQueen's Dune buggy for the movie (thomas crown affair) says it was corvair-powered: http://stvmcqueen.tripod.com/dunebuggy.html
I don't know the ins and outs of it, but I have heard that it is a pretty easy swap to a (liquid-cooled) Subaru Impreza block. This would certainly give you some extra power and those engines are very reliable. You will loose a bit of the old sound though...
Son of a gun. There's actually sites dedicated to it! http://www.type2.com/library/enginem/subaeng.htm http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/subaruvanagon/ And another Subaru VW swap site! 160 of them! http://www.rjes.com/html/about_subaru_engines.html Even Wikipedia has an article and swap chart! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_swap Oh! the fingers tingle to play!
