Talk about a forehead slapper! I always wondered why drums had a flange on the drums;I considered that to be a waste of material. Well, I looked at the bottom pic and saw the chassis rolling down the assembly line like a rail car!

 

Never really thought why but this seems to make sense. Maybe also to keep the drum round when hot.
I like these assembly photos. Amazing how some cars were put together and why repairing them after the body is on is so difficult.

 

I found this photo over on the Fourtitude forum. When I saw it, I did a double take because the door says "Yakima" which is my hometown. Judging by the rails it on and the readerboard in the background I think it is on the trolley tracks that still run through downtown.

 

Yeah, the truck is equipped with Hy-Rail, so it could drive on the rails, likely to perform overhead trolley wire work, and it's easier just to be on the rails than go off-rail, on-rail multiple times. The truck's door says "Yakima Valley Transportation Co."

 

I've never seen a rail set up like that. Appears to be removeable for regular road use without the little wheels in the way.
Back in llinois they use regular semi tractors with the added rail wheels as switch engines.

 

That's how the Hy-Rail system works. The wheels guide the truck, and it uses the drive tires to propel it down the track.
