There's quite a few here, for relatively little money. Just keep scouring Craigslist, that's my secret. That's how I got my 4x4 wagon.

Yup....I've been doing that, sojo. Unfortunately, the car I want is specific and rare. There are a lot of Subies there in your area, for sure, and in good shape. But I want an 82, 83 or 84, 4WD, stick/hi/lo and....here's the kicker....a Hatchback. Hatches are rare and if one comes up it goes fast. Especially in the years that I have listed and equipped as listed.:(

There's a guy by Anacortes who has a sloping hillside property plainly visible from Highway 20 and it is absolutely LOADED with Subarus...almost hundreds. I stopped in because a friend needed a part and I was there anyway, got to the door, made contact: the typical fat, unintelligent-looking hoarder-type answers so I politely asked if he'd have the part I sought and how much he'd want for it; he just kept staring at me, grinning, not a word. I decided this guy was over the edge, said a polite "Adieu" and got in the car. I waved at first as I rolled forward, then floored the gas, converted 5 fingers to one and I was gone. Sic Semper Moronii...

BTW, send me a pic of the Subie you seek so I can keep an eye out for any candidates.

This is amazing.....we have a guy exactly like that here in WI. He has a place on a highway that has HUNDREDS of old Subarus of all kinds. He won't talk to you and won't sell you a car or parts. Since your post, I'm now thinking that they know something that we don't!

This is only my opinion: I've worked on many Subies, but I'll never own one. Subaru could've paid a lot more attention to the engines, esp. head gaskets and headbolts, but they never have. Subies seem to run great until about 75,000 miles and they generate that stumble...some worse than others. I know guys who do Subies who do the head gasket/bolt upgrades, but why in the world can't the factory do that? Zero-landfill, maybe...but isn't that negated by engines pumping out unnecessary hydrocarbons after 75K? Subaru could afford to pay a lot more attention to the aftermarket folks, they can learn something. It'd make the Subaru an undoubtedly better, more reliable car.

As I said, merely my opinion. As a guy whose driven sick engines home, had engine guts and oil in his hands and resurrected engines back to clean-burning, powerful glory, I feel I'm qualified to make this opinion. If you're gonna pay $15,000 and up for a new car, it should be built to last.

Built to last? I'm looking for an early 80's Subaru. Many of which have over 300K on the clock. How long should a 4 banger last?
The head gasket problem is real but came a little later than the model I am interested in.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere! So it was never always an issue, just somewhere in the '80s it all began? Because I've seen a lot of Brats and related body styles of the era zippin' around without so much as a wheeze. Wonder why Subaru dropped their guard and never got it back up?
