I always think of good plans but things don't always go as planned. I'm not sure how much of this is true. It sort of starts out like southern bar room bragging........ You ain't gonna believe this. Son in Florida called to tell me that on his way home from work on a back road he got into a race with a new Camaro and he beat the guy by over a car length with his 1985 Chevy long bed truck. Or maybe 1983, I forgot. He repeated that the Camaro sells for $50,000 and he has $1700 total in his truck, counting the truck. It looks sorta like this, only dirty white with four headlites. He replaced the stock engine and tranny with a built up 350 and one of those 'lectric computer controlled automatics. He added a high rise with two Holley 600 carbs and a few other things. With the highrise he had to use the old style distributer with a Pertronics kit. The truck is mostly white but what he calls a sleeper. He had to cut a hole in the hood for the carburators which he says is a conversation starter at the gas station, Walmart, and Burger King. We did our best raising him but after he crossed the river into redneck country flags with X's and little fat girls changed him. Of course the new Camaro could have had a 4-cylinder engine. "Hold my beer"
Actually he says he's geting over 15 MPG which is better than my Dodge Hemi was getting. His truck has high rear end gears. Who knows if the guy in the Camaro was even trying or it was an 87 year old half blind granny!
Hey, I had a great customer years ago who was elderly, in her late eighties, and she drove a 350-powered Berlinetta.
Weather permitting, I will try to go get my C10 out of the field it is in. This is the motor and probably transmission I will put in it for now. It's a little .030 over 283 with a small performance cam, intake, 4 bbl and headers with a turbo 350. I'm using it simply because it is complete, running engine. Pretty much using what I have for time being, trying to keep it simple and cheap!
Got it washed off, still need to clean the inside. Here are a couple pictures of the only rust through in the truck. That is what made me buy it 4 years ago! I was hoping it still had plenty of character but not rusted out. Floors and rockers are great just the tailgate and 2 small holes in each front fender.
Spent a few hours cleaning and buffing on my old jewel. This is going to be a cheap, fun, parts chaser and something I will take to Cruise nights. I know the worn out look is not for everyone (for sure not my dad) but I like a truck with good character.
A vehicle can have character, whether clapped out or polished; what I hate are the greedmongers who say that patina is worth a lot, and the dolts with more money than common sense making them right, one cash-stuffed wallet at a time. I'm glad to see the Rallyes made it back in one set.
The old truck held up pretty well. Minor rust and the Ralleys are almost worth what the truck cost you! Real trucks have eight foot beds!
Real trucks do work. If a Li'l Red Truck, a Ranchero or a Blazer can do the work, it's a real truck. My apologies, but your declaration is like those stickers women put on their rigs: "Silly Boy! Trucks Are For Girls!" And it p!$$es me off, because I've wanted a '78 Bronco ever since they debuted in September '77, a couple decades before any of those selfish twits were born. Please forgive my ranting.
