The Omni/Horizon was based off the French Simca Horizon, which debuted in 1977. The US car came out in 1978. They had the VW or Peugeot 1.6L or 1.7L engines in the first three model years, but switched to the US 2.2L engine in 1981. The only VW parts in the Omni/Horizon was the engine/transaxle, and that was only for three years. That one in the pictured ad is all US, engine and all. Even though the body is a copy of the French car, almost no body parts actually swap...

Since the car in the ad is NOT the actual car for sale, there's no telling what the real car actually looks like. Big thing to check on these is rust where the engine cradle mounts up to the body, strut mounting points, and floors in the Rust Belt states. Far as the engine goes, check to see when the last timing belt change was done. It says 100K in the ad, and the ad says it "ran when parked" (doesn't that apply to ALL cars?), so if the guy has no idea what mileage the belt was checked/changed, chances are it may never have been, and a belt job is in order.

The P- and L-body cars NEVER had a Mitsu engine in them at any time. The K-cars DID have a Mitsu 2.6L Hemi engine as an option, and the 2.2L was the standard engine.

Considering it's just for a winter beater...the Chev, why not? I'll have to admit if it was me buying I would not look at a car that is'nt running/drivable at the time of sale but if it is "only" the carb.....

As for the the 'lil Mopar, they may have kept the lites on when Chrystler almost went under before but they are junk IMO, disposable cars, head gaskets, CV joints, the list goes on. It sat for 9 years, your not gona just get in and happy motering for the winter.

OK if I had to pick I'd rather have the Chevy, but a test drive and inspection may reveal other things that require attention, like ball joints, suspension, steering, brakes. Those things can add up, and the car that was in better condition in that way would be cheaper to own. And that may be Omni.

    And the Chev doesn't have a 350.[IMG]

You can put one in. [IMG]

now andy, the point of the winterbeater is to not dump money into it. so your can do things like put 308's and roller rockers in your "good" roadmaster.

    well, jenn said,
if i must get one she would prefer i buy the 1991 roadmaster wagon off a friend
its a lil more than i wanted to spend but there is also nothing wrong with it. and i know where its been. so we are going to buy it once he gets his 1995 wagon fixed.
so i wont have to screw with getting a new carb on the caprice or getting the omni to run right.

Good choice, Ian...although it's a shame to waste a good wagon for a winter beater. Unless it already is a rust bucket.

That "clunker law" has passed the Senate and has gone to the House Of Representatives for further processing...Now,I happen to know, that when most people think "clunker" and "beater", they're thinking of cars like these two. And,while they're correct in thinking so,that's not the true point...The true point being, those same people will look at Toyotas,Nissans and Hondas the same ages and be seeing good and wonderfull cars.Cars that must be saved.Cars that cannot possibly be Clunkers and Beaters,,,because they're not American name brand cars...Since I have allready been asked,"Why don't you just get a brand new car?" innumerable times,,,I know I will be asked when I'm going to be turning in my Colony Park?,when that law goes thru...I allready know, that when somebody in an old foreign car asks me that,I will be returning with,"Right after you turn in your car."

I think the clunker law had a stipulation had to be newer than 84 or something
