There used to be a fluid available for cleansing these and cassette recorders, using a cotton swab similar to Q-tips. I think, the fluid was based on the wood alcohol used in windshiel wiper reservoirs? When 8-track units become dirty, they'll become a tendencey to detsroy these tapes. It's also important to keep unused tapes stored dust-free
Indeed, thanks for the reminder. Looking forward to receiving these. Hubs has an 8-track tape inherited from his Dad, who owned a 1975 Cadillac Coupe De Ville. Pretty sure it is one of those special tapes distributed by Cadillac, much like these special Ford tapes. He is sick of listening to that tape, his Dad used to play it non-stop, especially driving through the desert on the way to Vegas when radio reception was non-existent.
Whenever I think of 8-track tapes, my mind goes back to my job at Woody's Smorgasburger in Westwood Village, late 1968 - early 1972. Their sound system was a commercial 8-track player, and the music selection was maybe 4 tapes, the most-played one being the Beatles 'Revolver' album.... over and over again. And that damn tape never did wear out as long as I was there!
Hubs says: What's awesome about the cleaning of the system: these players have a small switch inside (location listed in owner's manual). You can activate the switch and clean the capspan with a Q-Tip and witch hazel. (also hit the head while you're at it). I did mine and the Q-Tip came out brown.! Lisa laughed and wondered how I know all the lyrics to " Moon River " It's on Dad's Cadillac 8 Track!
Krash, I never get sick of 'Revolver' It's my favorite Beatles album! "Moon River" over and over, however, would drive me crazy.
Well NOW it is also one of my favorite Beatles albums, even bought the CD. Just got tired of it back then. It was played so much, I can't even remember the other 8-tracks that were played.
Paul reports: "OMG, things i did this weekend to the ol' Squire.: removed the badly scratched and scuffed rear tailgate (or should I say "magic tailgate") to tighten the handle (which was about to fall off). 7/16" Socket and wrench fixed that. Removed close to 50 years of debris from the inside of the tailgate door: leaves, cat hair, twigs, gloopy-gloop. Kept pouring buckets of water through till all was clean. NO RUST! Yah!. Steamed cleaned carpets and dressed all the rubber. Waiting for AC parts so that can be completed. Back Panel was horribly scuffed and scratched and generally abused after 47 years of people sliding things across it. I dug in my inventory and found a half can of "Testers" brown plastic model paint. Matched perfectly. Looks much better, no?"
It sure duzz. They've even got those underground community garages over there also. Over here, friendly neighbors and their friends tend to help themselves to what's not chained down
Those speaker cones are most likely VERY brittle - one good twist of the volume control would probably blow them out!
I found a Dark Side Of The Moon Quad 8 Track on Ebay, but the seller wants 100 dollars for it! Nuts! Another guy wants something like 900, that's REALLY crazy! Bet that album would sound great on a Quad system though.
