I know that this question was asked about a year ago, but here's what our original luggage rack looks like. The side rails look to be a textured metal and not painted. It's a light gray contrast to the shiny finish above and below.
Forgot all about that note from the DOC. The 1969 pics I uploaded yestery with that sliding bar, have woodgrain inserts on the side rails and the rear airdam. Its all faded, now, of course.
Derick, That was a while back. Thanks for the pictures. I figured it was just a different texture on the metal and not painted. You have the same..rare...adjustable roof rack that I have. There were not many of those put on the 1967 wagos. I got that info from Adrian Clements of the motor city galaxie club.
I've seen different finishes on Fairmont/Fox roofracks, ranging from a satin/pebble texture to color matched insert to woodgrain and even matte black and polished stainless. Funny since there weren't that many made that they were so diversified with roofrack finishes.
Yes, my Dad special ordered that wagon in 1966, and got it set up exactly as he wanted. My brother owns it now, it's got 261,000 miles on it. We actually have the original black vinyl "Rotunda" brand car-top carrier that straps down to the rack. I think it was only used three or four times. How were the kick panels on your car, do you by chance have a decent set from your Galaxie? There are several items on ours that aren't salvageable.
I have been slowed down over the last 6 weeks due to a nagging knee problem that suddenly go worse after kneeling while working on the wagon. I had to have surgery 2 weeks ago and I am improving. Hoping to get back to the wagon soon. PS I did get the bumper brackets on the front an rear of the wagon. I was re-wiring the rear taillight harness before the knee went south.
We just finished all of the woodgrain tonight. 90% of the wood trim is on the car. I will update some pictures hopefully Thursday. We had to have all of the door handles re-chromed since no one make reproductions for the 1967 models! I will be picking them up from M&P Refinishing in Jeanette PA
Happy thanksgiving!!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Three years ago today 11-25-2007 11-25-2010 We just applied the drivers side decal and trim. It has been 3 years today since I first picked up the wagon. The body shop decided to paint the bumper filler panel the same body color. It should be Argent but I think it will look nice. I'm going to leave it and see how it looks. The bumper brackets were slightly bent after many minor collisions to match the bent bumper. They need to be re adjusted to fit the re chromed and straight front bumper...always something! Also, when they body work was done, the original lower holes for the trim disappeared. I have to re-drill new holes to put the bottom button sets on. Below is you can see the restored and straightened rear bumper brackets. Also the rear wire harness was so bad I had to rebuild that too. That is were it all stopped 6 weeks ago when the knee gave in!
Factory trailer package too? Nice. I can tell by the wire colours. I just redid mine, and used a Ford connector inside the rear fender cavity and a proper ground connection, because the exterior wires from the car always get damaged. Now I can just disconnect the broken one and solder in the new one. It sure looks different from the Day One pics. Like new, even...
It did have a factory trailer plug in the bumper. It is beyond repair. It also had the factory trailer hitch. I am not sure if I am goint to put that back on or not.
Good spot for a rearview camera? I'm always looking for ways to upgrade mine with useful equipment. A rearview camera works really well, between visits to the chiropractor.
