I forgot to mention that the tow package also comes with a tranny cooler. I'm probably forgetting other things as well.
Maybe I'm getting senile. But....not as bad as jangleguy. :D

Is the transmission of a higher grade, or is it just the lower gear ratio?

    Same 4L60E tranny.
The more I read about your "needs" .... I'm thinking maybe you should look for a Checker wagon.:D

Just a force of habit. I don't really use smilies except for "XD."

http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/485682-4l65e-vs-4l60e.html points out that if I want even heavier duty, I could replace the 4L60E with the 4L65E. I don't think this would be warranted though. Heavy duty suspension is really my "need." I want something less worrying and better on the gas than a Checker haha

There is someone near to me selling a 94 Caprice Classic Wagon for $3500. It's in nice shape, no rust, tow package. 140K miles. New distributor and a number of other things replaced on it. What do the various gurus here think of that price?

For that price, it would depend on how it is 'in the flesh'. If it drives good, and stops good; if the interior is in fairly decent shape; if the body and paint are OK, then I'd say $3,500 is a good price. 'Nice' B-body wagons ('94-'96) are going for $6,000 on up. So if you think that one is maybe just a notch or two below 'nice' it should be a good deal.

I would recommend having a mechanic check it out though, if you're not one.

I've only seen pictures, but cosmetically it looks to be in very good shape. Almost TOO good for me, as I like not having to worry about making a junky car junkier. I wanted a general opinion on the price before I drove out to see it.

I'm not a mechanic, but I have a mechanic friend that I bet would, for a few bucks, come out with me and take a look at it

I think I would offer $3000 if I was offering due to the over 100,000 miles.

I paid $3k for my '96 sedan with 100k on it.

My understanding is that the current owner selling it is a car enthusiast - he used it to tow a racecar he owns, but is selling the racecar so this car is going as well. I'm led to believe it's in VERY good condition, and I'll be finding out soon enough. He mentions a few marginal things that still need to be done, and I'm thinking of offering to pay the full 3500 if he gets those things taken care of.

I haven't gotten them myself. He's taking them tomorrow (when the sun is out). The car isn't too far from me, but still a few hour drive, and I want more pictures than the tiny CL ones before I make the drive out there to look at it and/or buy.
