Yep, 1979 was the last year for the true "big" Lincolns. I bought her with, I think it was 65k original miles on her. Everything was stock from the factory, auto temp, auto headlight, leather, quad 8 track (digital) with CB, power split bench, and the only rot issues was on the rear bumper, where it bolted to the frame. Also original paint, half top, and chrome work. I sold it when I went to college. I payed $4,500 for her in '99, sold it for $5,500 in 2004. Along with that one and my '78 DJ Ed Thunderbird, I wish I never sold them. Both had the 400cid, just like my '78 CS dose now, ALL my 400's have been loyal to me. Heck, my '78 CS has over 250k original unbuilt miles on her....
Hey wagnut....I had a 77 Lincoln TC with a 460 in it and it was CHERRY. Loved that car and wish I still had it.....except maybe for the gas mileage. I've had several of the cars you have had.
The '75 Mark V, I bought with about 34k miles, it still had the factory tires on her. Moonroof, "halo" top, deep blood red leather, four wheel disc "sure track" rear ABS, it was like driving a cloud on gumdrop tires. As for the MPG, she was thirsty. It cost about $300 in fuel in 1998, from Chicago to Laramie, Wyoming. But that ride I-80, along with my '96 Town Car and '76 LTD Brougham, felt like you could hit a switch on the dash and it would be on auto pilot, it was that confertable. Never did take a picture of my '76 but it looked exactly like this one. However I had the standard wheel covers.
Wow. All these photos of past and current rolling stock make me wish I was a more frequent photographer. Out of the 30 or so vehicles I've had, I only have photos of a few of them. Maybe I'll have to go through the old photo collection and see what I can come up with......yeah, we're talking actual photos here, not digital images.....
BA, you and the Rev and Ford Fellow are just plain car angels, saving these wheels for posterity and making sure the planet doesn't tilt too far East or West: Here's one of FF's threads with some, only some, of the back 40 acres: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4500 This is my favourite of all of his threads: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4318 Well, almost: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4828 How do you guys keep track of why you got them and what you plan for them? Or you just can't resist? EDIT! Number TWO Favourite! Roo, his dog in the snow! Too much fun! http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3999
BigA, according to my count, you've 25 vehicles in that barn? Wow, it must be a huge barn. Plus, you've got some more daily drivers?!! I had my Taurus X, my Colony Park, a 91 Explorer and a '95 Chevy 2500 plow truck that I keep in Vermont. A few months back I gave the Explorer to my nephew because I thought I was getting too many vehicles. I can't imagine having as many as you, the Rev and FF do.
Sold it, Ian. I love those cars with a passion....probably one of the best cars ever built without a doubt. But they are getting old and few and far between. They suffer from electronic problems as they get older with all that computer stuff in them. Corrosion problems in the connections. You can go through them and fix it all but it's a nightmare. And mine had a little rust starting. So, I had to decide whether to go for it or sell it. I ALMOST went for the complete restore on it but decided on a wagon instead. That was my 4th one of those and I will ALWAYS miss having one.
my dad had a pearl 1997 mark VIII i loved that car. and of the 100+ cars my dad has owned in 35 years he said that is his favorite! the air suspension is a pain in the rump. i know there are coil conversions...but its not the same. i loved that car...driving it around south florida was just a bonus! actually of my dads cars ...thats my first favorite..followed a close second by his 1998 contour SVT
Mine were all Mark VII's, which I prefer for a lot of reasons. Out of the 4 that I owned I never once had a problem with the air bags. Amazing, I know. Now days it's a fairly easy fix anyway. You can do it in your driveway. They are simply great cars and Ford should have continued them as a high end sport model like a beemer, etc.
oh i agree 400% that was the car that should have never died. they also should have never killed the LS
