From the "WTF were they thinking?" Department:
The Southern Pacific Railroad was approached for coming up with a way to transport more of these Rent-a-Bombs than what could be loaded on an 89' triple-deck autorack car, so they got together with the GM engineers and came up with the Vert-a-Pac car, which essentially loaded 30 Vega/Astre/Monza/Sunbird/Skyhawk/Sunfire cars vertically on fold-out doors. Because of this, the cars had to have special-design features, such as a special oil baffle, a float bowl drain to the charcoal canister, the battery filler caps were on the top rear to prevent acid spillage, wedges in the suspension and drivetrain to prevent bouncing around and the windshield washer bottle was at a 45* angle. This allowed the cars to be ready to drive once the cars were unloaded. This method of transport only lasted the years they were in production.

Amazing way of moving cars on the railway / railroad (!), never happen in the UK because of loading gauge restrictions.

Still very good looking cars. Not the best build quality, but I'm in the market for a 2nd gen H-body hatchback.

A little sidebar on the Oldsmobile F-88 Mark II concept car posted above. I never knew about this one......

I knew about the original Mark I, now in private hands after selling for BIG money at a Barrett-Jackson auction a few years back:

Here's another shot of the Mark II:

And there was also a Mark III, apparently built off of a later Corvette platform, maybe '61 or so.......
