Westwood Village, Los Angeles, late 50's. (I see a '57 Buick Caballero parked out front of the Ralph's Grocery Store.)
I worked in this area about 12 years later....Over on a street just to left of the domed building (Bank of America) at the left edge of the pic. This view looks approximately north. Just beyond Westwood Village to the north is U.C.L.A.

I was there the 2nd night. They hadn't gotten the sound system dialed in yet. During the intro the whole building was shaking. Thought it was a quake at first. Line was much shorter on the second day.

    I saw it here.....

Wife and I were having a boring Saturday afternoon with her best friend dropping by for a short visit. Someone has an idea - "Let's go see Star Wars!" I told them I only wanted to see it on BIG SCREEN, not one of the multiplex theater places. We looked up the times for the Mann's Chinese showings, and we had about 45 mins to get from Hawthorne to Hollywood, about 25 miles via the crowded freeways. We jumped in the car........

When we got there, they were long lines of people (who already had tickets), and it was about 5 minutes before the scheduled showing. I let the girls out to buy the tickets while I parked the car. That done, I got in the 'have tickets' line and the girls got the tickets just as I was passing by them in the line. They merged with me and we went right in. The only seats left were the first 3 or 4 rows, which turned out to be PERFECT, as my most memorable movie-watching experience happened when that big ship comes out of the screen (seemingly) over my head, with the whole theater being shaken by the sound. AWESOME!

I watched Star Wars as a kid on VHS. I still remember when my dad got us all together to watch the first movie. I was hooked and couldn't wait for him to bring out the next one. We about wore those tapes out watching them. When I was in High School the original trilogy was re-released in the theaters for a special anniversary or something. It was quite the experience seeing a film I was so familiar with on the big screen for the first time.
