The smog isn’t quite as bad as Fernie Payan, 24, makes it seem, but he caused quite a stir driving about the city on Oct. 29, 1965 wearing this gas mask. Los Angeles was suffering through its third straight “smog alert” in three days. Payan appears to have been driving an MGA in this press photo from an unknown newspaper.

No, they're not. The Viaduct was built in the late '50s; these are the supports for the Alweg Monorail under construction for the Century 21 Exposition at what became the Seattle Center. All you have to do is look at the sign near the top: "Alweg Monorail to Century 21."

And with a 1960 Valiant, 59 Ford, 56 Buick, and 54 Chevy in the picture, its certainly not 1951 either as indicated in the picture's caption.

So now the question is is the Alweg Monorail still there? Have those big supports been removed?
I've seen those pictures before. Maybe posted here earlier. I notice many photos are now reposts.

The Monorail's still there. The city tried building a new monorail system several years ago, but politically p!$$ed it away. This monorail would've been torn down to replace it with new systems.

On an aside, I got stuck on the Monorail when I was a little kid (8 years old in 1973), and made the local news with my sister and one of my brothers for about 3 seconds. The film still exists, but I couldn't tell you if it is on the Net or not.

That monorail is slow and stupid.
Walt Disney has a better one built a few years earlier which runs faster and way more efficient.

Once again, no. The Disneyland Monorail, with a differently-designed body, is mechanically the same Alweg system Seattle uses, and predates the Century 21 Exposition by only 3 years. And, the Disneyland system cars have gone through 5 generations in the time it's existed; the Seattle Monorail has used the same two trains ever since the lines opened in 1962. Only the Disneyworld systems are faster, as they are newer lightweight designs.

Both systems have a 30 MPH operating speed.
