Anyone else notice how much better night shots were back when we used flash bulbs?

Also found myself drooling over all those great cars at the Volvo/Triumph dealer.

Some of those night shots are timed exposures, and that is why the quality. Also, the GOOD old cameras had the possibility of longer exposure without needing the timed function. Either way, you are right, the quality of the night shot was miles better than any of the digital cameras now.

 

Back when you could still find P5 bulbs in the local good will I experimented with them v.s. electronic flash and found the the results were consistently better with the bulbs. I don't think that it was just the rather high guide number (around 190 ASA 100 film IIRC) but rather the longer pulse combined with the better distribution using even a cheapo flash holder reflector. The electronic flash was always more harsh, uneven and lacking in depth.

It seems that in many areas the pinnacle was reached shortly before I was born. Flashbulbs, Vacuum tubes and Sunliners.
