    Chicago Auto show 1979

Inside the Chevrolet exhibit, a male performer is dressed as 20th century American comedian W.C. Fields, and a young woman as Little Orphan Anne. They are performing a skit that features the Chevette 4-door hatchback. On the right is a rear portion of a Camaro.

I'm no fan of Tayota, But...

A high, close-up view inside the Toyota exhibits featured a side view of a Cressida station wagon, with simulated wood grain appliques. Directly behind on the right is a side view of a Corolla 2-door sedan. Several Celica GT Liftback models are in the background, with a Corona 5-door Liftback on a raised platform mid-photo.

    Chicago Auto show 1960

Ford premiered its new Falcon station wagon at the 1960 Chicago Auto Show. On a raised platform, a female dressed in a western-style outfit stands alongside the two-door wagon. The compact Falcon was powered by a 144 cubic inch six-cylinder engine, mated to a standard three-speed manual gearbox, or optional two-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission.

    Rare two door Ranch Wagon

In a rare color photo from the 1960 Chicago Auto Show, a large crowd milling through the Ford exhibit is frozen in time. A two-door Ford Ranch Wagon posed in the foreground with the top half of the tailgate open, was the lowest priced full-size Ford wagon that year.

    Wagon in the background.

A close-up view in the Rambler exhibit shows a smiling woman behind the steering wheel of a Rambler American two-door sedan. Notice the small hubcaps, blackwall tires, trophies, and the sign that states "Rambler--Economy King."

    Chicago Auto show 1961.

Among the inaugural events at Chicago's new McCormick Place was the 1961 Chicago Auto Show. For the first time all American and imported cars and trucks were in one vast arena, as the $35 million facility provided over 300,000 square feet of exhibit space. The nine-day extravaganza took over 850 man-hours to assemble. Of more than 400 cars and trucks on view, visitors were able to examine the new compacts including the Buick Special, Oldsmobile F-85, Dodge Lancer and Pontiac Tempest. On the right, an outdoor billboard promotes the 53rd edition of the Chicago show at the new McCormick Place exposition center.

I'll take the 57 Chivy Handyman out front.

Many models are positioned in the completed Chevrolet exhibit on the top floor of the new McCormick Place exposition center. A production 1961 Corvette is on the far right, with the sensational Corvette XP-700 show car behind a fenced-in platform. That vehicle originally was released in 1959 and predicted the rear wraparound lines on the 1961-62 Corvettes. Full-size Chevrolet models, now devoid of tailfins, can be seen center and on the left.

    Rambler Love:

Several 1961 Rambler American compact models are in this scene at the American Motors exhibit space, including a convertible on a raised platform in the center, and a two-door station wagon on the far left. The car on the far right is a 1961 Rambler Custom four-door sedan.

A 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL convertible with roof up is posed in the foreground of the Mercedes-Benz and DKW Auto Union exhibit space. Further back, in front of a large painted mural of Stuttgart, Germany at night, is a Mercedes-Benz 190SL two-door coupe. The front end of a 1961 DKW Junior can be seen behind the white "P" letter sign.

First vehicle I ever bought was a 1964 Falcon based Econoline pickup. Got it at a school auction for $25.00 I wish I still had it since my oldest son loves Cab over Semi trucks.

    Bonus for the white Ranchero.

At the Fiat exhibit, many Italian-built automobiles are on display. In the foreground (partially blocked) is the "Jolly" sedan (beach buggy). To the left of the Jolly is a 1500 roadster, with a 1200 4-door sedan on the far left. To the right of the Jolly is a 1200 roadster. A 2100 4-door station wagon is on the far right, and a glimpse of a 1960 Mercury front fender is at lower right.

    Chicago Auto show, 1962

In its second year at McCormick Place, the Chicago Auto Show continued to grow, with exhibits on two levels of the facility. Among the new models introduced that year are the Chevy II, Ford Fairlane and Mercury Meteor. For mid-1962, Chevrolet turned the rear-engined Corvair into a sporty machine, courtesy of a turbocharged engine, tachometer, four-speed gearbox, tauter suspension and Monza Spyder designation. Among the imports seen that year were Alfa-Romeo, Austin, Commer, Daimler, Fiat-Abarth, Osca, Porsche, Opel and Simca. On the right is a rare view of the Mercury Palomar concept vehicle at the '62 show in Chicago.

Cars are parked in lots along the lakefront, within walking distance of McCormick Place, in this wide shot toward the south. People can be seen walking toward or from the Chicago Auto Show.

    *Looks cold.

Scene outside the Rambler exhibit, featured an American convertible at left, and an Ambassador four-door sedan on the right, particularly blocked by a freestanding engine display Posed on a raised platform in the center of this shot, is the Rambler Centaur concept vehicle--which does not look remarkably different from regular production models. Glimpses of other Ramblers can be seen to the rear.

Scene at the Jaguar display space, which features a pair of E-Type (XK-E) sports cars: a closed coupe at left, and a roadster at right. Jaguar sedans can be seen toward the rear, including a Mark X (left) and smaller Mk II. Plymouth's exhibit space is farther back. Jaguar's Mark X was new this year, replacing the Mark IX. The E-Type Jaguars had debuted in 1961.

60's Jags are cool, but there is a Plymouth wagon in the background.
