My uncle on mom's side and his friend went for years. I wonder now why he never took me? I was looking closely for him in those photos. Never know but I didn't see either of them or remember his last year there. Thanks for these pictures and others.

It was a while back. The family and I went to a car show in a park near by. One of these wagons was there. We liked it a lot. The wife really like the idea of the roof rolling into the front of itself. The owner even pointed out the crank handle. Demonstrated, only once, closing the roof and opening it again.(There was probably a demonstration of closing it again near the end of the car show) Someone else asked if they'd ever come with a power top version. The owner said he wasn't sure. All he knew was, it was like that on the roof of his wagon... A few months went by, and suddenly, there were commercials for brand Suburbans with power top version, on the TV. Seems the guy that asked that question worked for GM, or something... Seemed somewhat coincidental to me and my wife.

Thanx for these car show pics. Since learning of their existence, have always wanted to find one those Bobcat Runabout woodies. Or the woodie wagon version. Yes, I know, they're just Pintos in disguise,,, but, then again, Mustangs started out as Falcons in disguise, so---

Not many years after moving to Florida, near Gainesville, we went to an all Studebaker car show. We'd recently bought a 1950 Studebaker Commander 4-door without engine. With luck we were invited to follow some of them to a private yard where the Studebaker lover had a lot of Studebakers, repair shop, parts, and junk yard. In the yard was a decent Studebaker wagon with the sliding top. A first for me. I believe it was white or off white.
Don't know what happened to the cars or the property. Owner, inventor of GatorAid, passed away and everything was rumored sold.
Also the original 55 Chevy Corvette Nomad was designed to have a sliding roof like that. Not enough time to perfect it. But that's why those ribs are in the top of the Nomads.

Love that Wagonaire. It would be perfect for transporting organ consoles.

Just for the record, there is no crank handle. You unlock it, then manually slide it to the desired position.

I tell you.... parking lots were much more interesting to walk through back then.
Heck, even in 1978 I liked walking through a parking lot because of the interesting shapes.

Today.... egg shapes and stupid head and taillight designs assault the eye.

Great shots. Thanks for posting. I can't believe this thread is still alive and thriving. Fun, for sure.

    Freekin' giant.....

Actually, this looks like a scene from a TV show or movie, and the actor looks a bit like Ted Cassidy, the actor who played 'Lurch' on The Addams Family TV show in the early/mid 60's. Cassidy was 6'9" tall. His page on IMDB.com shows he had a number of guest-starring character roles on shows in the late 60's and early 70's. he died at the age of 46 in 1979.
