Internationally recognized as one of the world's most
beautiful stores. Famous for its distinguished contemporary
architecture as well as for its atmosphere of graciousness,
it is known as ''The store for all Southern California''
Built in 1944, I understand now it's in the hands of May Co.
This is a postcard so the quality is not that good. 1949-50

This must have been a simpler time when all it would take is a few
painters to paint a gas tank at one of the petroleum companies like
a jack-o-lantern and have a news agency to cover it.

I believe that's somewhere down in San Pedro or Wilmington, down by the L.A. harbor. Belongs to one of the big oil companies, and the paint it up like that every year. Light it at night, too.

LAX, 1988. Bradley International Terminal and double-decking
of roadway were completed in 1983, just in time for the 1984
    Summer Olympics.

In 1912 Marius Taix Sr. built a hotel called the Champ d'Or
in downtown Los Angeles' French quarter. In 1927,
Marius Taix Jr. opened Taix French restaurant which was
located at 321 Commercial Street serving chicken dinners
for 50 cents at long "family-style" tables. Diners could choose
private booth service for an extra quarter. Taix's novel food,
unique service and affordable prices make it a Los Angeles
institution; The French quarter" in downtown Los Angeles on
Vignes Street is named after after Jean-Louis Vignes,
a Frenchman who settled in LA in the 1830s and owned a vineyard.
The area of his vineyard attracted other French settlers and a little
"French quarter" developed. And, today in Chinatown, what is now
known as the Pacific Alliance Medical Center used to be called the
French Hospital. There's even a statue of Joan of Arc
    in front of it.

    ^^^^

Living very near there, I'm surprised I don't remember this.....

Actually, the plane appears to be a twin-engine Cessna Skymaster, like this one:

The Continental Building is a 12-story residential building located on the corner of 4th and Spring Streets. The building was built in 1904 by John Parkinson, who was known for designing many of Los Angeles' historic landmark buildings such as the Alexandria Hotel, City Hall, and the University of Southern California. The Continental was originally named the Braly building, after John Hyde Braly, who was a leading financier in Los Angeles who oversaw construction of the building. The Continental was the first fully-representative building of Beaux Arts style in Los Angeles, with a façade distinguished by rich ornaments of terra cotta, striking cornice bends, pediments, and project lion heads. The building is also known as the first skyscraper in Downtown Los Angeles. It was built shortly before the city enacted a height restriction in 1905 on all future buildings, making it the tallest building until the 1960s with the only exception being City Hall. The Continental stood at a height of 175 feet, unmatched by any building for over 50 years. The architectural makeup of Spring Street is such that the Continental still remains the tallest within the Historic Core, with most buildings only reaching a maximum of 12 stories at heights under 150 feet. The building originally served as an office space, later housed by many banks as part of the early 20th century attempt to mirror New York's Financial District. Spring Street at the time was commonly referred to as "Financial District West." The Continental has since been redeveloped by Gilmore Associates and converted into 56 loft style apartments in 2001 as part of the Old Bank District residential conversion project.

The Wales apartments at 344 S.Olive. Interesting place; Thomas Bailey and his brother Wellesley were tireless fighters for the lepers, and although Thomas is not as well-remembered in the history of the Mission to Lepers in India, he was its organizing secretary and traveled the world to spread the word. While in Los Angeles about 1896, he and his brother-in-law came to realize that beside all this Christian charity, a clever thing to do would be build apartments on Bunker Hill! So they did, putting up the Wales Apts. sometime in 1903.
