Comedian Ernie Kovacs died in this accident driving his wife's Corvair Wagon. He was drunk.

I very distinctly remember reading about this incident in the paper when it happened - probably saw that same picture in the paper. At the time, I wondered why a successful actor/comic was driving a Corvair?

IIRC, it happened around Christmas time, somewhere on Sunset Blvd.

His wife said that he had a habit of not watching where he was going, and that he would routinely take his eyes off the road and reach down on the floor to recover something that he dropped. I had never heard or read that it was caused by drunk driving. Here is what has been reported.

    citation for quote.

So, he was married to Edie Adams, and this Corvair belonged to Edie Adams. The accident was in '62, and, "Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" came out in '63. She played the wife of the dentist (Sid Ceasar) in the movie and was in the 62 Plymouth wagon for the first half of the movie.
