Cuban 1951 Studebaker Station Wagon


Jason Vogel of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil sent in this picture of a Cuban 1951 Studebaker Station Wagon. Now, as far as I know, there is no such thing as a metal body 1951 Studebaker sation wagon, but here it is. It appears that it is being used as a taxi. My understanding of how things work in Cuba is that only cars that were in private hands before the Revolution can continue to be privately owned. This has resulted in extreme measures being taken to keep these old cars on the road. It has also resulted in some interesting modifications and hybrids such as Studebakers with Nissan engines. I would guess that this interesting station wagon is another example of Cuban ingenuity in the face of automotive adversity. Thanks to Jason for his continued contributions to this page.

Oh, like yawn. What is that, a Chrysler? Wow. A Chrysler wagon. What did they make, like 23 million of them? And you call that purple? I’ve got your purple coming up in a little while, but first, here’s another one from my files:

I covered the rebirth of Ferrari #86 for the June 2006 issue of Sports & Exotic Car. The 1951 car went through many iterations including–you guessed it–a shooting brake body (alright, technically it was a “Giardinetta” or “Famigliare”) by Fontana, for use as a chase/support vehicle at the Carrera Panamericana.​

Fontana shooting brake body…Columbo V-12 #10-E. Dude. Stick that in your Mow-Par and smoke it.

I’m the Martin Brody to your girl-who-gets-eaten-in-the-first-scene, the Nathan Bridger to your Lucas Wolenczak (or Darwin, he sucked too). I’m the Imperial Star Destroyer to your TIE Fighter. I present the Taj Ma Garaj 1958 356 Kreuzer. It might take cojones to break a Jag, but it takes bowling balls to do so to a 356.

Give it up before I whip out the Death Star.

There were many of those, Stef...USA ski team wagons. I just recently rented a car dolly to go get one for sale here in WI but it was too rusty so I passed. Still had all the paint and decals, though.
