That poor Fairlane. How many beer cans you think that thing became?

 

Before the advent of 'autorack' rail flatcars to deliver automobiles across the country, they were loaded four to a boxcar in specially-outfitted 'automobile boxcars.' These had racks inside that allowed one car each end to be placed inside then elevated and locked in place using chainfalls and special jacks to manhandle the new cars; then two more, as shown above, would be placed under the lifted cars. But as the trucking industry began taking automobile deliveries away from the railroads, the railroads had to invent those 'autorack' flatcars and set up circus-style loading facilities in order to make the loading go quickly, so as to get the business back from trucks.
