That Safeway pic at the top of the page, post# 19486 - I saw that pic a few weeks ago (maybe here, a few pages back.....?) - and I got to wondering - where is this. It sorta looks like Los Angeles (sometimes, just from the surroundings I can guess pretty good on location - at least ones I'm familiar with). It's got a street sign in the pic that looks like an L.A. street sign, but dang - I can't make out what it says. So I look up the original source, which is a web site or FB page (can't remember which) that shows pics of old grocery stores. This one had comments from a bunch of people claiming this was in Utah......or Fresno..........or L.A........or Timbuktu. LOL

The only place I've ever seen a Safeway was in England. We didn't have those, in the Mid-West.

I've seen Safeway stores but don't remember where. Most where we lived in the midwest and south were Piggly Wiggly, A & P, Krogers, years back.
I heard that Piggy Wiggly was just another copy of A & P......... Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.

A & P and Krogers were around, in our area. Supermarket chains buy each other out, change their names or re-arrange their strategies often.

"We care at A&P." I never saw one out here in the pacific Northwest, nor in San Diego. All you saw were Safeway, Vons and Ralphs, and a couple others I can't remember the names of.

There are still Safeways in northern Virginia. The A&P and Grand Union chains are long gone. Krogers are in southern Virginia, but no farther north than that as far as I know. Giant, Wegmans, Food Lion, Shop & Save, Weis, Martins, Harris Teeter, Safeway, Trader Joes, Whole Foods and Aldi are the main supermarket chains we see around here now, and they still have to compete with Target, Wal-Mart, and Costco.
