    I can't find a picture to back my memory up, but from what I can remember the 46-49 Buick wagons had a duel tailgate, the lower section that is open in this picture was for storage of the spare tire & jack. The middle section below the open window is the normal tailgate at the cargo load level. Good eye on seeing the open lower door. I had forgot about that feature.

    I found this picture of a 41 Buick that shows the layout of the lower storage door, and you can see the separate handle. Wish I could find a shot with that door open. So the 3 hatch design was late prewar.

    Interesting arrangement. The Merlin and V-1710 aircraft engines have the exhaust out the outboard side of the heads, and the fuel and air induction in between the cylinder heads; this has them reversed. It does look like it could be a V-1710, though.
