The Arch Bridge over the Connecticut River,Bellows Falls Vt.to North Walpole N.H.-- In 1905 this was the longest arch bridge ever constructed. Total construction time was four months using 45 men. (In 1905 there was a speeding fine for
$5.00 for driving faster than a walk, per order of the selectmen.) Opened on March 20,1905.-- In 1971 The State of N.H. closed the bridge to vehicular traffic, due to concerns about the condition. December 1982 the bridge was demolished. The demo crew took five times to blow it up...it wasn't as weak as they thought ! Then they used torches to finish it off.--

Thaks yeller. Inquiring minds always want to know. Verrrry interesting and just shows some engineers need to do better studies before they ruin good bridges.

    Description:
This image depicts a bridge over the Connecticut River connecting Bellows Falls, VT with Walpole, NH. The bridge was built in 1905 and at 540 feet long, it was America's longest through arch for many years. Here, painters stand on top of the bridge behind a sign that reads "Erected by towns of Walpole and Rockingham 1905 Lew F. Shoemaker & Co. Builders, Philadelphia, PA." The street on the bridge is cobblestone and is divided in three sections. There is a metal railing along the side of the bridge. On the left side of the street is a pole with a flag sticking out of the ground. On the far side of the river, some houses can be seen, as well as the outline of mountains. This information comes from "Crossings, A History of Vermont Bridges" by Robert McCullough.
