They should have been watching where they were going instead of checking fuel prices.

Argentina starting in 1962 from CKD kits sent from the USA, the first step away from the original car came in 1963 with a mild restyle. From 1966, a wagon version was offered; being based on the sedan wheelbase, it shared more with the Australian wagon than the longer US-spec model that suffered an epic rear overhang.

By 1970, the original Falcon was a distant memory for the US, who dismissed it as another cynical compact, while Australians preferred to forget the family car. But for the Argentineans, it heralded a modern, quad-headlight upgrade and disc brakes. But still 1960s doors.

By the end of the decade, the 1962 Argentinean Falcon had received its fifth restyle to include a plastic grille and the newly re-introduced ‘Blue Oval’ Ford emblem. Flow-through ventilation was added with vents now found on the c-pillar.

The 1982 Falcon was the last facelift and possibly the most mind-warping. Still with original 1962 doors, albeit with safer, flush door handles, the car now featured square headlights and large tail lights which fitted stylistically with other Fords of the 1980s; the also-Argentinean-assembled Ford Taurnus and Sierra models, as well as the Mark 2 Escort.

The final years of the Argentinean Falcon saw a flurry of engine options be introduced and fail; a 2.3 litre four-cylinder was brought online, only to suffer worse fuel economy than the six-cylinder models, while an Italian-built 2.4 litre VM Motori Diesel was installed from 1988, but were discontinued due to unacceptable acceleration issues. Presumably, it had none.

After selling a record 35,000 cars in 1973, it was a slow decline for the old Falcon; sales peaked and troughed but failed to hit 5-figures again after 1984. In 1991, the final year of production, only 2462 were built. Still, despite its aged dynamics, elderly body and possibly insane amalgam of parts both modern and ancient, the Argentinean Falcon sold nearly half a million units over a 29-year lifetime.
