Vintage wagons in scrapyards

What a sad picture. I love VW vans. I've owned a few and now they are slowly becoming extinct.

 

I understand that many of these vehicles were just old cars when they were sent away to the scrap yard. They had little or no value at the time. I get it. But, every time I see one of these images all I can think of is "why!?"
About the only reasonable response is a

 

Guy on the left: "Do you think any of these will become collectible in the future?"
Guy on the right: "Hahaha collectible!? Of course not! These hunks aren't Victorian furniture"
Guy on the left: "Oh good, then I don't feel bad crushing them."

 

Here, the valuable business coupes seem sorted out from the ordinaries. One's even got a sunroof. So, maybe, at least, this guy was onto something
