    Truthfully, none of those cars had much in the way of aluminum; what gets me is the amount of oil and scrap steel we were selling to who became our enemies in WW II. There's a famous quote, I think it was RADM Kidd, one of the force commanders at Pearl Harbor that fateful day in December 1941, who said that because of our economic policies, it would be likely we would be "Facing a Navy that will be burning Texaco oil and shooting Buick fenders at us."

    They were shooting the fenders, because of an oil embargo placed to contain their expansionist policy. If we had left them alone, no fenders would have been shot and there wouldn't be such thing as cheap slipshod imported junk and organ transplant tourism

    I suppose my point was more inline with the thinking that once the scraping practices of WWII began most old cars in wrecking yards didn't stand a chance of being saved.
