The loco and passenger train appears to be New York Central, and might or might not be the '20th Century Limited,' as it appears to be leaving the old Lasalle St. station, Chicago. The next one is the reason cabooses ended up getting steel frames. Many a crew ended up dead from a rear-ending like this. Same with paying passengers in wooden coaches.
I'd still be uncomfortable in a steel-framed caboose, as long as it wasn't located somewhere in the middle of the train. I guess, the crew was worth less than cargo. Setting cabooses on the end improved unemployment statistics, as accidents of this type became frequent. All tunnel entrances along the Rhein River in southern Germany are identicle:
