Ah, "The low Spark of High-Heeled Boys" or Blind Faith blasting out is very cool. But, I despise 8-tracks. I've never had good luck with them, no matter how clean and demagnetized I keep the heads, or the tracking adjusted. I invariably end up with consumed tape. Even cassette has recently let me down.
Andrew, it's not the player that is at fault. The cart's themselves need maintenance too. I posted a nice thread here on the forum about 8-track and cart repair back in 2012. Indeed, I still have the original tapes I bought while in high school ('75 - '77), carefully repaired over the years. Not magic, just common sense.
Of course I knew. Jairus, I look at 8-tracks the same as I look at points ignition, they work somewhat well, if you keep up on them, but you will have a problem in a short amount of time. If you're willing to do the time, hey, more power to you, but I'm not. It's bygone tech, just like record albums, and so I'll stick with the better technology that doesn't have a maintenance schedule.
Albums are commanding rising pricesn and there's nothing at all wrong with them, if the tone arm is balanced and care is taken not to scratch them or let dust collect. It's claimed that the sound quality of records is better, because notes aren't compromized
