Power doesn't mean squat if the truck's left unattended. And yes, I've seen pics and videos of frustrated loco engineers who will clear a right-of-way. The questions then become: A) who owns the right-of-way, and B) if the railroad doesn't, are there laws on the books to govern what vehicle drivers are and are not allowed to do?
In many cases, the law of the jungle rules. Looking into the cabin of that truck, there's someone sitting in there. If he hasn't turned up the radio full blast, he might notice what's about to add his bumper to the locomotive's cow-catcher. I would love to see a photo taken a couple minutes afterwards
What needs to be remembered is this is a still shot. I'm sure the truck was in motion when the picture was taken. Also the train might just look closer, than it actually was.
Workers are seen hoisting a car that fell through the ice in February of 1945. They’ve rigged up a pulley system on the beacon tower at the end of the breakwater. The fog bell can be seen right behind the hoisted car. There are many fishing shanties in the background. At the right, if you zoom in you can easily identify Converse School, Cathedral, the Masonic Temple, and Cathedral Grammar rising above the trees. In the far distance further to the left is the steeple of St. Joseph’s church. Detore/UVM Special Collections.
