    To ad to what Doghead has already said it also aided in cooling the brake drums, more airflow getting to a larger surface area of the drum. And as always I suspect there was a cost savings factor for the manufacturer.

    Those 50s and early 60s MOPARS were probably forming rust bubbles on the sheet metal before they even boarded the ferry.
