I just saw, on FB earlier, that the Rodeo Drive-in is set for their 2018 season and will be open in late April.
Have 1 of the last drive-in movie theaters near me. Not a movie theater goer, but think I will try it out this summer. Before they are either all gone or I'm too dead to go. Grew up in New York City and remember trying to figure out why someone would want to go to these, when you can just walk 3 blocks and see a movie Virginia Drive-in Theaters http://www.driveinmovie.com/mainmenu.htm Virginia's very first drive-in theater was built back in 1938. At its peak, the state had more than 140 drive-ins operating within the state. Since the 1950's though their numbers have dropped significantly and the state now has just 6 remaining drive-ins. Virginia is also home to America's first non-profit drive-in, the Hull Drive-in Theater, which was saved from closing in 2000 when members of the community formed a non-profit group for its continued operation. Family Drive-in http://www.thefamilydriveintheatre.com/ 5890 Valley Pike Stephens City, VA 22655 About Family Drive-in The Family Drive-in is an old fashioned drive-in which still maintains a playground at the front for the kids to use before the show. It is Virginia's only remaining twin screen drive-in. It is seasonal and runs from about March thru September with double features shown on each screen. They only allow outside food if you purchase a food permit from the box office for $5 at the time of admission. They do allows pets as long as they are leashed at all times and well behaved.
For the really big cities, yeah, you take the bus/subway/EL to the local Bijou theater, but in places that weren't very big or had land out the ying-yang, drive-ins made perfect sense as our love affair with the car matured. Nowadays, it's cramped multiplexes with very high concession prices. Having your own car to sit in (and most places now use a short-range FM stereo transmitter to broadcast the sound) gives you fair privacy and the ability, in most places,to have what you want, not what is served. The last drive-in movie I attended was the "War of the Worlds" remake, as well as "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."
As I mentioned in another thread a while back, I've never been to a drive in. I drove by one yesterday in Estill Springs, TN and when I did a search on it, I was surprised to learn it was opened up in 2004 and wasn't a vintage drive in. http://www.montanadrivein.com/
