Interesting.... Based on what it looks like from the Google Earth pics, looks like the mine company runs the town......Mine is like 5X's the size of the town, which seems to have grown to the south over the years. Can't grow to the north - that's where the mine is.
Yup. The 'boomerang' in the pit is where the mine began. Standing at that apex and looking across the operation in a NW direction, the distance had to be at least a mile and a half, if not more.
