I think, if U.S. manufacturers wanted to, back then, they could have built scaled down dual-overhead camshaft engines not requiring timing-chains or belts for the automotive industry, as well
I was just thinking the same thing, again. I say it a lot when I see pictures like these or hear of great stories of dedication and co-operation as well as inventions created anytime when needed.
Could you imagine even gas rationing, or meatless Tuesday’s? Society today would be on its ear if they went through what our folks did. 4 years without a new car. OMG.
Could you imagen someone sending apps to cellphone owners causing all of them to explode, of which some of them were known to do, in the past? Or if the next president were to order all telephoning done through stationary dial phones, through executive order?

I think we could, however the cost would be higher, as all brand-new factories would have to be built, rather than existing ones converted to production. Only the car and aircraft industries still have factories, more or less.
