I know these engines were perfect for their intended purpose and since most of them were stationary pump engines, they were set up to run on natural gas. that makes them probably one of the most efficient engines in the world. Greater than 55% of fuel put into it came out as working power and torque. A very tough engine here. Tales of a million miles or 200,000 working hours are not uncommon. Most of the trouble they had was being locked in a shed for six or seven months between checks and having something go bad in the alone time and no one to shut it down. they just kept chugging along on 11 or 10 cylinders and barely noticed the bad jugs. By the time someone noticed something was wrong, it was too late to save the engine or the crank. But I have never heard of one blowing a block or snapping a crank. Solid lifters were very reliable in the valve train and the things are just plain tough! Very tough engine!!
This old thread regarding truck usage is what I based my fuel thirsty statement on. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=286241 How's this for a wagon idea? Front clip from a first generation Monte Carlo grafted onto a Chevelle wagon with one of these bears under that long hood.
Hey buddy! Look what I found! You could have one for yourself if you are wanting it enough? Dave. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=gmc+702+engine&_frs=1 Ross. I sent you an e-mail.
It couldn't be as bad as the Chrysler Fan Sherman Tank Engines http://www.google.com/search?q=dr+r...23,d.aWc&fp=1fb2aa51c51f870e&biw=1280&bih=620 They Consisted of 5 Flat head inline six's hooked to one gear box. What a nightmare. The Walter P Chrysler Museum used to have one on display.
That's very interesting. An excellent utilization of off the shelf parts. The choice of a common crankcase is interesting though. A failure in any "sub-engine" would be seemingly a quick fix but the shared oiling would distribute debris throughout all five. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dJK61SbRh0
Very cool! Nice find! http://thunderv12.com/ This guy builds that engine exclusively and sells some one-off performance parts for them. Not cheap, but very cool. Car Craft did a short blurb on them a couple months back. I want one in a '65-'66 GMC short bed!
Cool engines for sure but $18k? Comparing it to the RR 1650 is any way is absurd. Ebay auction was ended so I suspect it is in the hands of the Thunder folks.
i used to have a truck junkyard where i worked and saw a few of these and they were massive but cool looking
