Kevin, We did check that. It turned out to be a couple of different issues that, combined, caused the battery to not charge. I hate chasing electrical gremlins and am not very good at it. So I was grateful when my friend offered to help.

They have not been done before. Aside from installing the intake and doing new valve cover gaskets a few years ago, this thing is how it came from Ma Mopar.

Well, it is his car now. And he's making money mowing and scraping, so it's the natural progression. He's also going to be doing the lion's share of the actual work.

Thanks Marshall, I hope so. With our luck it will be done just in time for the cold weather and putting it away for the winter.

This past Saturday the boys, our neighbor Steve and I began disassembling the top end of the 318.

It went fairly smoothly. The boys learned a lot along the way.

Got the heads off, and to no ones surprise…
    Water in the cylinder.

The good news is that despite the grossness and the grease and the grime, everything looks and feels good.

We are going to send the heads out to the machine shop to get mag’d and cleaned and then surface them if they are all good.

The gaskets looked OK just old. I was nervous that the machine shop was going to come back with bad news.
Fortunately they came back with great news. The heads are fine.

    IMG_4665.jpeg

They mag’d them, and they were good. He cleaned them up and surfaced them. He said the valves are all good.
They picked the heads up around 10 AM and by 2:30 in the afternoon they were back here and ready for me to take home.

Nathaniel is going to bring most of the hardware and some other bits here to work so he can use the parts cleaner to get them spiffed up before we start working on putting things back together.

Yes it was. I have known the fellow who runs the shop since I was a kid, even went with his daughter for a year in high school. Good people. He knows this car and it's history, so he was very happy to be able to help Nathaniel out with getting it back on the road.

Pretty slick. And yes, we will be doing our best to gussy it up. We're armatures, so we'll see how this all turns out.
