remember, people can be very persuasive.....espescially hard up car salesmen. a lot of people cant afford a "new car" because to get a payment that is reasonable, the down payment would be more than the car (that would be crushed) is worth in trade in value. for example, my wife traded in her 1997 cavalier with under 100k in on a 2005 ford escape. they didnt want to give us anything for it (it had a ding in the hood but not rust and the car was clean) but then offered $500. that lowered the payment by $10 if i recall. point is 3-4k will bring the payment of an otherwise unaffordable payment into the ballpark.
the government hopes this will lead to the purchase of a new hybrid.

my 8-banger buick would be what they would have considered prime fodder with the old bill, however, the new bill puts my cousin in the crosshairs, she has a dodge durango and her husband has an explorer. This is the type of family that the greenies HATE with a passion!

luckily we dont have to deal with militant enviromentalists here in pittsburgh, i feel for those of you whom live in LA or Seattle. that have to deal with people yaping at you about your choice of transportation.

dont get me wrong i care about the environment, i think we should recycle waste, and buy recycled products that's just being efficient! but i beleave (man made) global warming is the biggest buch of BS ever cooked up. emmissions from cars is FAR FAR less than it was in the 60's and 70's and they claim the pollution is worse that it was???? can i go cut my cats of then?
.....sorry for the rant:rant: but i had to get it off my chest.

The 'Green Folks' would hate my family. Here's our fleet:
    2000 Silverado
    2002 TrailBlazer
    1995 Jimmy
    1957 Chevy 210
    1958 Delray
    1952 Ford F-2
    1971 Harley FLH
    1999 Harley Wide Glide
    1980 Corvette Stingray
    1987 Caprice Estate

Every car except two are 8 cylinder cars, and we only have 2 cars that do better than 20 mpg, and that's barely. But you know, the only two cars that do much driving is my wagon and my mom's TrailBlazer. I just don't see the harm in having these good old rides. But the eco-nuts go after anything that makes the average person happy, I guess.

These "Green" SOBs can have my 360 powered, 650 Holley Double Pumpin' gas-guzzling, pollution packing Volare wagon when the pry the key from my cold, dead fingers! That is, if they make it past the SKS, .357 Magnum, .22 Magnum, my Rottweiler, and an ill-tempered Cockapoo, not to mention a menopausal red-headed wife. Come on, I DARE you!

    those California politicians.

This sort of thing has been going on a long time, here in the Land Of Golden Opportunities.Mostly in Southern California, but Sacramento and San Francisco kick in their three cents worth too(they are just way too good to only put in two cents worth)every once in a while.:banghead3: One of the ideas the man in charge of the Air Quality Management District in 1988 wanted to do was;outlaw ALL pre-1982 cars from daily use on the streets.Safety, mileage and emissions standards were set for all foreign and domestic cars in 1982.And they were, therefore, way better cars than those made before then. They would've been allowed as collector's items, but only if completely restored. And allowed on the streets only for parades and stuff like that.:49: In California, cars eight years old and older are Gross Polluters, just because they are that age. They don't have to be trailing smoke or anything. It used to be,you had to get your car to pass a Smog Test every two years to register it,until it was 25 years old.Now it's till it's 30 years old.:( Registration fees for newer car are way bigger than those for older cars. Many cars, eight years old and older can be registered for less than $100 a year---but Ahnold, the Governator, wants to double that soon. It's still way less than the $1000's a year you pay to register brand new vehicles, though.:disagree: I'm not surprised Feinstein is behind this. She has a very skewed version of "progressive" running through her head...These buyouts only work as long as there are sellouts.Don't be a sellout.Keep your Love alive.Vive le stationwagons!!!(y)

The Governor in Oregon has talked about putting GPS tracking devices in every registered car in Oregon. He wants this in order to track the mileage that every citizen travels and tax them appropriately. He also wants to adopt the California emissions standards. When does it end? This state is becoming so anti-car. They widen the roads using gas tax revenue in order to put in bike lanes for people that don't pay the tax.

I actually had someone in Portland write in chalk down the side of my wood sided country squire a lovely message:

"This is an example of the waste of renewable resources & a gas hog FU*K YOU".

So the attack on cars in through Government & social circles. Can we win the fight? Who knows.

There has been discussion in NC to keep records of miles traveled annually from inspection to inspection and tax owners based on this. You can bet a GPS would be used for more than keeping up with miles driven. I'll bet a lot of them would malfunction.

    ???

And the stereotype of Oregoners(is that right?)here in California is that they don't want to be anything at all like Californians...And ALL of that sounds SO California to me.;)..I have always distrusted GPS for vehicles from the moment I realized that "they" could turn it on at any moment and monitor your vehicle without your knowledge.:49:..Used to think bke lanes were a good thing, too. They're even put on the part of the road the bicyclists said they wanted it.On the side---AND THEN,they ride out in the traffic lanes and on the sidewalks anyway!..And I guess "Never mess with another man's vehicle" was just a line of dialogue in a Clint Eastwood movie.:( No respect,no respect at all...

    that GPS BS

Every time "they" want to raise taxes on gasoline, here in California, what usually gets it voted down is,that "they" end up taxing the poor unjustly when "they" do that.As it is poor people who are (1)less likely to live close in to big areas with lots of jobs (2)because of the distance to work are less likely to use public tranportation and work with somebody they can carpool with...That must be magnified in the Carolinas.

I don't like the GPS either. I have heard that On Star can eavesdrop on what is being said in a car.

    the worst kind

The interactive GPS services are said to be the most invasive.Since you can talk to them, they can hear you.Mute their mic and you can't hear them when their listening.Onstar knows how many people are sitting in your car.If they're all wearing their seatbelts. It knows if you're speeding!Because it knows how fast you're going and what the speed limit is where you're driving.(A rental car company got sued for handing out speeding tickets to drivers, eventhough law enforcement agents hadn't.The ruling was that they can only charge those drivers ticketed by police)And "they" can turn it on at anytime without your knowledge.Pro-GPS folk say,if you always obey the law and never do anything wrong, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about...I say,if I always obey the law and never do anything wrong, then they don't need to put that thing in my car!

    And

AND,,,If they really need to know how many miles I've traveled, they can make the mileage be part of the yearly registration form.

Black boxes have been in cars for years. They are bad enough, but this GPS/On Star is too much.

the gps idea is waaaaaaaayyyy too big brother, i am not comfortable with it at all. taxing people on use of the vehicle is also wrong. what about contractors using pickup trucks? sometimes these guys have to go bid on jobs that they don even get. so they lose out just doing thier job.

if a gps can track your mileage it can then also by default tell where you are and how fast you are going. can anyone say "mail-order citations".
a couple of years ago toyota did this idea one better with a concept car that instantly sent a message to the local constibulary when your car passed the speed limit. i can see the way for this to turn crooked....(as if it isnt already). we have a few borough's around here that are crooked as it is. and a "conveiniently mis-calibrated gps" can fill some coffers fast.
its bad enough the red light cameras are crooked as the colorado river.

When I lived in Tallahassee the TPD had a speed trap situated where the limit drop from 50 - 35 mph the officers would hide on a side street just inside the 35mph zone (we're talking 50 feet here..not a 1/4mile ) and shoot the radar into the 50mph zone. i got a ticket, magistrate said since there were two officers present and both said i was in the 35mph zone so the officers word is law.....basically "pay up sucka" :banghead3: .

SquireDon: i envy your calmness, i would have put the tree hugger in the hospital.

if we have to put gps's in our cars... i say its time for the american revolution part2 .

    boxes

I don't mind the idea of the black boxes so much. So,they find out I really did stomp my brakes before I t-boned the bubba butthead that cut me off...I seemed to remember some piece of paper that talked about how The People shall remain secure in their persons, places, papers and things from unwarranted searches and seizures by agents of the government.Whether they be places or things(or members of the family)The People have a Right to remain secure---in their cars---from OnStar style GPS sytems.;) ...But that's just my opinion...I don't think I could be wrong...:disagree:
