Merci beaucoup!!! Oops! Muchisimas Gracias!!! Just got back from a neighbour's fence building session, but the temperature was slooowww to climb, so it's wetsanding and coat number 5 this afternoon. Hehehe! It's gonna be great! I took a peak at her before I left for the guy's fence. In the 10 years that we've had her, she's never gleamed like that!
how would we know, weve only seen one pic. how about more heheheheeee you know if we didnt give you mierda about it, we wouldnt care
OK! OK! Already. Its 8:45 and I just got in from putting on the 5th coat. I did the fence posts this morning until 12:30, then got going on the wetsanding until 4:00 PM, and ran out of light by 7:20. So I plugged in a light to finish the front end. Gorgeous! I'll run the pics onto my hard drive and put them up on the gallery tonite and post something back here.
Picture At Last Well not quite last. I've still got 2 coats to go and all the assembly. I've read the instructions to post an image from the gallery (BB Image Code?) but I'm brain-dead - Can't figure it out right now, so here's the browse image starting point. http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/gallery/browseimages.php?c=4&userid=273
Should get coat 6 on today, but then they're talking 60% chance of rain for 3 days! I'll say my prayers tonite!
Sixth Coat And PICTURES!!! I got the 6th coat on even though the temperature barely made it to 11C and 4 hours later, when I finished the last front fender, it slipped down to 9.5C. What happens is that it releases its chemical aromatics much faster. Fortunately, I went to 40% Paint/60% Thinners, but I had to roll on shorter lengths and only 3 roller widths or the paint would flash too fast. At the end of this rolling session, the temptation to call it done is really strong, but I'm going one more coat! Mainly because I want to see how good it looks after wetsanding these last two (Coats 5 and six) with 800 -grit. I think that's the one that really makes it shine. 600 is great! I looked at a few cars when I walked over to finish the fence job. Mine looks better. I can read the Directions on the can of paint in the reflection! What will I see after 800 wetsand and putting on the seventh coat???!!! Pictures??? Rolling it on the top of the fender - note the foam roller: Brushing out the bubbles - note the brush angle: Touching up the wheel well edges with the brush (You have to prep them first - sanded smooth, etc.) I had to braze in a 10 inch replacement section, right at the top, that I made from some new sheetmetal I got from an old stove we replaced. Came out perfect! (even with the mounting tab for the PVC liner. I covered the new tires with plastic bags to keep the muck off (sanding and paint drops) The passenger rear quarter wheel well got pushed in by a van that didn't look before he moved. And I had to make a small (6 X 6) replacement piece from the same stove for the rear, bottom of it as well (brazed and filled) My camera friend has a bad rust section, so he took quite a few shots of mine. I used a slide hammer to pull most of the bend out, and filled in the rest of the crinkle. Did I mention that I stripped out the car? Engine compartment from the front: I had some lengths of 6" X 6" fence posts left over, so I used them to make a cat-walk to paint the roof on each side of the car. I cleaned up the hood and spray-bombed it before I installed it, as well as all the hood latch hardware. I had to make a hole for the air-cleaner duct through the fender wall. The V8 only had a boss/bump there to mark it, but battery acid had taken its toll, so I made a new insert after I located the stock cut-out. Then I spray-bombed the engine compartment and the insides of the door panels before I ever started rolling paint. I wanted all the overspray issues out of my hair. All the doors and tailgate have been sprayed with rubberized undercoat. I've got the shop manuals from Ford for all the 1978 models (Lincoln to Bob Cat) and the circuits, but I can't find where the underhood lamp connects for the Fairmont. Even the Chilton and Haynes manuals don't show where it connects. So I'm thinking I use the Lincoln's method of connecting it to the Glove Box switch. View of Driver's floor from underneath below rocker panel at front fender (The V8 exhaust system is new and still hanging down since I dropped in the 200 CID I6): That hitch handled 1.5 tonnes from Guadalajara to Winnipeg (2,600 miles), the car is undercoated front to back. I left that one gas tank strap undone because I may get a couple of new ones, if I can't find replacement parts. All that plastic is taped down. Its old insulation bundle packing that I kept for this job. We get high winds, so without taping I would have found it by the fence. The inner door panels too and door frames: I'll try to get him back to take some shots of Coat 6, and once more for Coat 7, after polishing. Then the glass and trim goes on to close up the car with locks.
The weather forecast sucks! Rain! Rain! Rain! But the nights don't go down to freezing. That helps hold the ground heat. I'll try to wetsand tomorrow or Thursday. If I can get a decent 4 hour stretch, I'll paint the seventh coat. So far, Saturday looks clear, but too cold. Thursday is warm enough but 70% rain. I hope they're wrong. Good days are getting hard to find!
look at culo chulo representin' Brown and proud! LMAO hahaha j/k buddy. thats about the only thing that sux is that the paint comes in such plain jane colors. what if we mixed our own colors????
Color? How's this? In Canada: http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp?frm_product_id=541&SBL=5 In the US: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=150 What I like is it comes in rattle-can form if it's from this list, as well as quarts. They make a tint base here, but it seems that you'll have to ask about the tint base (email them), and you can get body shop paint vendors to make up cans of it, but it's like $20 per can!!! http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp?frm_product_id=555&SBL=5 Since we drove it in at our border as a collector car from Mexico in 1999, the DOT was ticked off that they had no control on cars from Mexico AND over 15 years old so they got the regulations changed. By itself, that's not a problem, but how many Troopers know that or our own Highway police? The serial code says brown paint and woodgrain, so if I drive into Mexico or the US, and come back with it, I'll get it back into Canada. So its brown - Mexican Mole color. They call it Chestnut Brown 27002.
I said my prayers and guess what? Cloudy this afternoon and 11C (wetsanding Coat 6 and MAYBE paint Coat 7!!!) But Saturday went from 9C and cloudy to 14C and Sunny. Sunday 11C and Sunny, too!!!
My buddy and I hit a snag with the fence, his mom wants a gate where the new fence is going up between her house and his. So he's got to help another lady so he can get a ride to pick up the 2 posts and 16 boards, and we want to get paid today, so no painting on my car. It's just 11C right now and I need 6 hours to wetsand and paint. I found every wimpy muscle in my body moaning and groaning with "Ouches!" Getting old sucks! It's all in my mind. It's all in my mind. When I click Submit Reply, I'll be 35, handsome and richer. No? Oh well. We'll finish the fence, get paid, rest up and wetsand in the drizzle tomorrow. Bah humbug!
Too cold to wetsand today 10C with 30 KMPH winds = 8.2C! Saturday is still supposed to be 14C and sunny with low winds. I don't want to blow this last coat!:banghead3:
Got it wetsanded with the 800-grit today - only 11C. I've never used anything finer than 320 on wood finishes, and 400 on bodywork back in the late 60's. I've never felt such a smooth sandpaper, never mind wetsanding! I didn't think it could do much. Boy was I wrong! It levelled out every little pock mark, brush stroke, dead bug's leg, there was and still left the paint silky smooth! Freaky! Anyway, there's still 1 more coat to paint, TOMORROW, and then wetsand with 1000 grit, and then 2000! The 800 paper would slip off all by itself when I left it for a few seconds! A couple of friends popped over and said they wished their 1 one-year old car looked as good and called me crazy to sand it down. I told them to come back after I do it with the last coat. It looks good.
