I have a perfect test rig in my southern fried Cutlass. I seriously doubt anything short of a sander can improve this.
I just have to say this and this is just my personal opinion for what its worth What works for one person, given their specifics are unique to them at that particular time, may not work for another. In the end does it matter? Is it worth the negativity and potential bad feelings that can be created by challenging something we truly have no way of viewing in person, and regardless, it is all he said/he did/ versus I can't/I didn't...... These forums are great for sharing ideas, and what works for us, and if someone else doesn't like that then don't do it. I sadly watched other forums get into these moods where suddenly everything was challenged, every thing had to be justified, and when the person did an apology was sent - but by PM, not even on the thread - so the original poster cut and paste and good for them. Put the "family" back into the forums we so enjoy and if you don't agree with someone and what has worked for them then fine, you state that it is not something you'd do, and be done with it. If you want to continue to disagree, please take it off line so the rest of us don't have to feel the angst. Thats just my take on these various threads that are suddenly turning confrontational for simple reasons I don't quite get. Maybe it is time I take a break - I'm finding the trend disappointing and don't particularly want to watch more and more of these threads going down this same path.
It worked! both of these suggests really do work! Because two honest hard working car loven enthusiasts have tried them and they have seen the results. Pics or not I can't believe either one of you would waste you time posting all this info without having proven the results to yourself. Thanks for posting these suggestions, for green horns like myself it's great to read about several ways to attack a project. So please gentlemen put your cleansers down, shake hands and call it a draw K? As for the break I don't think so, your black and white stripped shirt is in the mail.
I may give it a go on the Cutlass this weekend just for the heck of it. Nothing to loose, really. I will do before/after pics as well.
OK, the Cutlass is going to be a guinea pig tomorrow. I bought a gallon of Goof Off Rust Stain Remover. Looked like it may be a bit more appropriate for the job at hand than CLR although they're probably similar in formulation. Results to follow. Wonder if the pizza grease stain will come of the trunk lid too.
I don't think pizza stains come out of anything... We'll be looking forward to your science experiment.
Worth the effort... Well, this was the Cutlass weekend here. I was already in the middle of diagnosing & repairing the driver side power window when I got started on the derustification process. Of course, as soon as I am ready to begin, it starts to rain and I can't roll the one window up yet. No bother, I'll just stick the tail out for now. Here we go. That garage pizza party a couple years ago was fun but I'm ready to finally clean the 'table'. Yuck! After soaking one half the decklid for a few minutes I started rubbing with a Scotch Brite. First pass looks encouraging. Second pass. Both sides. And the pizza is still with us Fannie. At this point, I finished replacing the power window motor and put the door back together so I could seal the cabin up for the rest of the cleaning on Sunday. The hood was next and it looked to be the easiest. Now, the best for last...the roof. Come in a little closer, you've got to see this. Let the fun begin.
When I was through up there all that remained was a mild sunburn. Much better. I finished up by spraying all the top surfaces with a satin clear spray paint to seal it up to keep that old iron oxide at bay. With the car being garaged now, it should be good to go until it gets a proper refinishing. Pretty good return on around $20 worth of materials and I hardly dented that gallon jug of Goof Off. Saturday night I also created a custom air cleaner decal in honor of the wildly anemic V6 under the hood. Did it in mimicking this actual decal.
Patina??? I Dig Patina...Paint Is Over Rated And Over Priced! Check out my custom tee shirts for sale...$15.00 each/2 for $25 plus the ride!
OK, doubters and haters, you have your proof IN PRETTY PICTURES! You CAN indeed "wash" away patina. Questions??? That air cleaner decal is a riot!!!
|Goof off ah! That's amazing.... It must have been a heck of a garage party, that's alot of stains. Well it should be safe now, all cleaned up and tucked away out of the weather. next time how about a tablecloth. All kidding aside it looks awesome that elbow grease really paid off. what's your next step?
Pretty impressive results, Olds Weighty Eight. Now, considering that what you documented is only the first of the three processes listed in the original post, I'm a believer that you can perform amazing feats of resurrection with this method.
Next step is to replace the factory 2.41 rear gear with a 3.23. I already replaced the 200C 3-speed automatic trans with a 2004R overdrive so the old Bottle Rocket should accelerate a bit better without penalty. And that blasted computer controlled Dual Jet carb is a dud... But, before all that, since it no longer resembles a junk yard dog, I may just roll over to the weekly cruise-in with it. :icon_drive:
Yeah, it's not getting any more appearance steps as this car is still wearing its original 30-year old lacquer paint and it's really whooped. I'll enjoy it as it is and when finances allow, it'll get new paint and vinyl top. Removing the majority of the surface rust stains made it look a ton better.
