Is that a high-performance drivetrain for an Ape? Such as, perhaps, your Ape?

Yeah, a couple of days ago I witnessed some nit-wit walking down the sidewalk with a blind fold on. I slowed the car to observe and the guy bounced off a maple tree onto his a#$. I damn near wreaked my vehicle laughing so hard!...Longroofs Rule! (even with blinders on)

The more I think about this, the more questions that I have. Did they not put oil or ATF in until the cars arrived at the train yard? Thought they started them at the factory.
At the time, rail cars could fit 15 vehicles each, but Chevrolet was able to lower shipping costs by making it possible to ship 30 Vegas per rail car, in turn allowing the price of the Vega to remain as low as possible. Each rail car had 30 doors that would fold down so that a Vega could be strapped on, and then a forklift would come along and lift the door into place. All the cars were positioned nose down. Chevrolet's goal was to deliver Vegas topped with fluids and ready to drive to the dealership. To do this Vega engineers had to design a special engineoil baffle to prevent oil from entering the No. 1 cylinder, batteries had filler caps located high up on the rear edge of the case to prevent acid spilling, the carburetor float bowl had a special tube that drained gasoline into the vapor canister during shipment, and the windshield washer bottle stood at a 45 degree angle. Plastic spacers were wedged in beside the powertrain to prevent damage to engine and transmissionmounts. The wedges were removed when cars were unloaded.

And it stank to high heaven for weeks, according to the newspaper accounts.

Yeah, that's quite an extreme mod. I plan getting a water-cooled cylinder for mine, so that I can then plumb cabin heat. I want to keep it as stock-looking as possible, so that I won't get pulled over or lose insurance coverage, after an accident. Without the removable box over the pick-up bed, these vehicles are more stable. I plan on permanently attaching the box and then cut the wall between the cabin and the carge area, in order to build a van with a normal car seat. Because these vehicles are unstable at high speeds with the box attached, I won't bother with upping the displacement more than it already is.
The mod in the video uses a cylinder from an Aprilia motorbike. In an APE forum, a member posted that there are already conversion cylinders available that don't need peripheral modifications. But, he hasn't yet posted as to exactly which one and how to get them. The Aprilia conversion would require block machining. Since I plan keeping the floor intact, the cylinder shown would have to be turned around backwards, so that the exhaust exits upwards.
Water-cooled engines run quieter, also. Which means even less drawing of attention.
Here's a Rotax cylinder on a Vespa roller. Apes share the basic Vespa drivetrain. I turned the unit around, in order to show the exact mounting position of how it would appear in an Ape

    Affe_Rotax.jpg

I then turned the reed valve package with intake manifold upside down, in order to show a like mounting for the Ape. Aprilia and Rotax cylinders are the best known conversion units for Vespas and Apes
