I don't think you sound unpatriotic Grizz. But it's kind of hard to have it both ways.
The "Natives" of the North American continent were once immigrants too. They didn't start out here either. History is full of stories of groups of people being conquered, pushed out, enslaved or completely eliminated by other groups of people. It's not a real great reflection of humanity, but it's a reality. The story of the settlement of the North American continent is multi faceted, but it's true that the indigenous folks got the short end in countless instances. But the truth is they fared better than many historically speaking. It's just that it's one of the more recent examples (historically speaking) and that's why it's in the subconscious of most people, specifically Americans.
There are many dark chapters in our history, but I'd challenge anyone to find another modern country that doesn't have similar such chapters. I believe it all comes down to perspective. We can't undo the past, but we can certainly make the present better by learning from it.
