That may be true, but there were U.S. highways that were the pattern for the Interstate system, and therefore already had stretches with interchanges, according to Dad. And that 16' standard came about from the howitzer "Atomic Annie," which was built in the late '40s. So it doesn't matter if the system was started or finished, it's waaaayyy too tall for open-road driving.

This looks like one of those photos the fellow does where he takes models and places them in real settings to photograph them.
    Really neat picture for sure.

I found the fellow I was thinking of, his name is Michael Paul Smith. His work has been discussed on here before. It's quite impressive. I'm not certain if this is one of his or not, but it could be.

What seems to be a truck driver falling asleep at 2:00 in the afternoon didn't get back up from his nap, if not for just a couple seconds. The ensuing flames from the collision eventually got the best of his cargo which was a tank full of liquified petroleum. Ordinary citizens who thought the event wasn't going to get dramatic, failed to seek a safe distance, underestimating what the second explosion would bring. Which resulted in blowing out the freeway pavement onto the unterground shopping district just below, not to mention broken windows on nearby buildings:

That same incident happened many years ago on Interstate 5 North of Seattle, and several times on Interstate 95 in various locations, one burning so hot, it destroyed the bridge it had stopped on, closing the Interstate until the bridge could be replaced.

This particular incident didn't burn the pavement, since it didn't have time to and the energy wasn't enough from the collision alone. It was the exploding tank that blew out what otherwise was roadway designed to carry plenty of weight. And to think, there are plenty of cars driving aound with such tanks in miniature

By the looks of the tank, had it begun tearing at the bottom instead, it would have been hurld upwards, instead of through the pavement. Nevertheless, who knows if, in that case, it would have made much of a difference to the pavement's blowing away or not
