Going back a number of pages (to page 191) I saw this. I raise you a video of the Hi-Rail system for buses from 1935!

Reminds me of the A&W joints, as well as the Triple X root beer joints we used to have around here. But nowadays, they're one of the chains owned with KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Long John Silver's. So you find one, it's with a KFC or an LJS, and that bites the big one.

Still at least a couple of stand-alone A&W's in my neck of the woods - Florence and Sweet Home, Oregon. Been to both. Not the newest of facilities, but the food (and the root beer) is still good.

Fortunately, the KFC/A&W in South Everett has the fountain with a separate spigot for the authentic A&W root beer.

Sad news hearing that John Glenn passed away today at age 95. As a kid John Glenn and others like him were the kind of heroes we looked up to. I remember reading the Happy Hollister adventure books my Aunt gave me with stories about Cape Canaveral and the test flights sending monkey's in space.
In 1962 John Glenn became the first American in space orbiting earth 3 times. We were glued to our TV sets forever fascinated with this accomplishment. Throughout his private and po...litical life Senator Glenn was a class act. At age 75 he traveled in space again on a Shuttle mission. He will always remain a true hero in my eyes.
I have my old scrap book from grammar school. In it I found some art work I did back in 1962. It was my interpretation of the historic John Glenn space flight. On the scrapbook page I wrote " Another space flight by John Glenn was made safely around the world 3 times".
He got to travel to the Heavens and I am sure Heaven will now be his new home.
    RIP John Glenn. DSC00373.JPG

We might have a difference of opinion on whether John Glen was the first American in space. He was the first American to orbit the earth in space, but there were two preceding sub-orbital Mercury flights. Technically, it was Alan Shepard, Jr. who was the first American in space, making his sub-orbital flight on May 5, 1961, reaching a height of 117 miles above the earth. This was three weeks after Russian Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space. (Alan Shepard was also the only original Mercury astronaut to step on the moon, in an Apollo mission.) Virgil 'Gus' Grissom followed with the Mercury 2 sub-orbital flight on July 21, 1961. Gus Grissom would later die, along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-launch test of Apollo 1 when the capsule caught fire on the launch pad.

John Glen was certainly a hero, and most probably the one you picture when you hear the word, 'astronaut'. Probably could have been elected president, too - if that's what he wanted.

There were some who thought Glenn would've been a good president. But, Alas, Mr. Clean Marine, AKA The Mig-Mad Marine, now commands Marines guarding the streets of Heaven. Rest in Peace, Mr. Glenn. You will not be forgotten.

Opinion: I believe he should be afforded the same State Funeral afforded presidents. In my humble opinion, he earned it many times over.
