I've seen many vehicles turn into Blazers since fuel injection and computers came out. I was a trucker plus we camped a lot and don't remember this happening on older vehicles. When it did happen it was rare. Even in movies they created the fires and explosions.
    Ain't progress great?

That's because steel doesn't burn and plastic does.

The best one was when a former customer went to the Mobil station across the street to buy gas. He started the pump going and went back to sit in his air conditioned car cause it was hot out. The pump didn't shut off (he had his gas cap jammed in the nozzle), gas ran down the side of the car and onto the ground under the car. The catalytic converter ignited it and everything burst into flames. The gas under the car superheated the gas tank causing all the gas to spray out of the filler neck and on to the gas pump. The hose burned thru causing even more gas to spray all over and feed the fire which spread to the canopy.

Everybody at the Mobil panicked and ran because they thought the station was going to blow up. We were standing watching this whole scenario transpire. I called the fire dept. and we grabbed our fire extinguishers and headed across the road. We first hit the emergency kill switch to shut power off to the pumps and then tried to contain the fire. By that time, the fire dept took over and went to work.

My old customer was an A-hole, but the Mobil dealer was a friend and I felt sorry for him. The canopy and computer pumps were all new and had only been installed 2 months before. The guy's car was totaled and his insurance also had to pay several hundred thou to fix the station and I'm sure the guy got stuck paying a nice chunk of change too. The fire was so hot that it warped the beams holding the canopy up.
