Yeah when I was younger loved it as I got older not so much and found family friendly place to take kids Mardi Gras day but they have finally outgrown it, for now anyway. The parade today is just 3 miles from here and I still have no interest in going even though we are much milder than New Orleans. The only part I really miss is everyone with old cars, hot rods, motorcycles etc. are usually out cruising around showing off their cars which was nice.

    Dewey,
She's wasting money. The "worst" that is going to happen where you live is when Yellowstone blows and everyone out that way will be nothing but a grease spot on the horizon. That whole part of the country just scares the hell out of me because the devastation will reach all the way east and probably take out part of Canada too.

My honey wants and keeps a large stash of emergency stuff also as she, we in general are waiting for a long over due earth quake , I'll even admit I all ways make sure the generator is working and keep gas stored for it, keep diesel just incase we run out of oil, keep a good supply of fire wood, all ways have a few 20lb propane tanks full and all the camping stove and such is readily available but that's for if we loose power and we have lost power before once for over 10 days. Her car has a emergency kit good for 2 days etc, ., my car none. The main thing I emphasize to her and all other hard core survivalists is....... You can stock and hoard emergency stuff all you want but what good is it "if" a real disaster happens, your 50 miles from your stash, and you can't get to it? Or you get to your stash and find it destroyed. Your as screwed as the next guy who did nothing to be prepaired.

But, IMO it's still good to be prepared, but...............

So after California drops into the sea and we have to tie up the boat in Idaho, and then Old Faithful blows up, we can go to Florida and all move in with Cat.

Not so fast. There is a broken nuclear power plant pretty close by in Crystal River. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_River_3_Nuclear_Power_Plant

Plus, as the earths climate changes and the sea level continues to rise, most of Florida will eventually return to being little more than a sandbar in the ocean.
And everyone who stays behind will have to be fluent in Spanish, the (for now, anyway) unofficial language of Florida.

Come on down. But bring your tinfoil hats. We live 50 miles north of the nuclear plant. It's very easy to see from Cedar Key, 35 mils east of us, because Florida gets wider as it goes south leaving the nuclear plant looking as if it's in the Gulf of Mexico to us.

The San Andreas Fault, New Madrid Fault, Yellowstone Caldera, Nuclear anything, CMEs, EMPs, Government lab experiment gone wrong, pandemic, Justin Beiber clones. chemical spills, war... humans.

No I don't believe that the living dead will happen. Maybe zombie-like traits accompanying sickness after a botched lab experiment or a pandemic.

There are two kinds of preppers as far as I can tell. Hoarders and scavengers; both have their pros and cons. I'm, for the most part, the latter. I can't afford to store up a munch of things, Some yes but everything. However, I do know good places to go and I don't mean stores. I learned the scavenger habit growing up. Though cities aren't the best place to live during major catastrophes I know my surroundings and have learned much about this city. I don't think we're doomed. Honestly, I think the most likely to happen soonest thing could be the San Andreas Fault followed by Yellowstone blowing. Yes I believe that a colossal earthquake on the west coast could set off the fragile (geographically speaking) caldera. Depending on the flow and position of the jet stream would dictate how long I have to get my family to some form of safety... blah blah blah.

In the end, IF something happen, the most important thing to do is to survive the first 24 hours. Additionally, those that have the "Every [person] for themselves" will be the biggest, most dangerous problem, and should be avoided at all costs. THEY are not survivalists and are just as detrimental as the disaster itself.

Now back to regularly scheduled programming.
