The problem isn't the ants it's water getting in and soaking the wood. The ants only go after damp wood and if you eliminate the soaked and dry rotted wood the ants will never be back. That balcony was not flashed correctly or the decking was leaking.
Been a carpenter for 40 years and other than a few stray termites those ants are the biggest house-eating pest problem in the northern climates, I've seen whole side walls of houses eaten away, plywood the only thing holding it up, Celotex fiberboard wall sheeting is like a gourmet meal to those critters when it gets wet.

Make sure it's sealed up right when it's finished, water getting in is your problem. The guy who built it is the biggest problem, my jobs never leak, never called backed for an ant.

 

I agree. We've had a lot of flooding in the prairies and so many new anthills, that the City went up and down all the streets with ant pesticides.

Some of the hills were over 6 inches high! I'd go and kick them down and they'd be up the next morning!

They've started promoting some kind of foam chemical pesticide for yards, that plugs up on area, until the ants rebuild a few feet further.

Flashing keeps the water off, except in movies.

 

I believe you are absolutely correct! What we don't know, at this point, is how far up the rot goes. I'm very afraid that our balcony will have to come off. It holds up the third level deck. And maybe even worst is it under the balcony patio door and into the livingroom?

 

We're still working on the reno for mom. We had hoped to have it completed before Christmas...that never happened.

Hubby's brother never did show up(bas****). He had us waiting for about three weeks, I wanted to hire this local guy, he's been building houses around here forever. Hubby wouldn't have it so he did it him self took about another two weeks(just on the weekends).

So, to date we have new wood floors down in the recroom, two bedrooms(one is now a kitchen), the thrid bedroom will be getting carpet hopefully this weekend while I'm at work. The electrian has finished instuling the wiring for the kitchen which now has a brand new fridge, range hood(new stove will be delievered on Wednesday), new cupboards and counter top. We also had the smoke detecters updated.

The phone company will be around the early part of January to put in a private line for mom, update the digital recievers to DVRs and to move our internet to the third level where daughters PC is going, she's taking over the inlaw suite.

So after the carpet goes in, I think what will be left to do is some trim work around the new garden door and some floor baseboard.

Daughter and I moved a bunch of boxes this morning cleaned out the room that will be getting the new carpet, it had been used to hold all daughters stuff, new cupboards, etc. We were pooped by lunchtime...I had a nap this afternoon, I can't remember the last time I did that...can't be getting old...NOOO...just pooped!

As for moving things. I'm good for moving a few things... Just as long as I don't chip my nail polish. Then we have a problem.
