Cargo Area Panels Done and Installed!

At long last, the cargo area panels for my 1962 Olds Dynamic 88 Fiesta station wagon, resurfaced with the new "vinoleum" material from SMS Auto Fabrics, has been installed, courtesy of "Impala Jim" Fuller, who has spent the better part of the last three weeks refurbishing the panels, so that the end result is back to the shape it was in those many years ago when it was on the showroom floor.

Jim completed the work yesterday; there will be more pictures to come highighting the installation process. Here, the view from the back, with the tailgate down, and the back seat also folded down, maximizing cargo space.

This next picture, taken from the passenger side door, shows the view from that perspective...

To contrast with the first picture, this view from the rear illustrates how things look with the back seat raised. My wagon was a two-seat (six-passenger) model; a nine-passenger (more like eight, to be honest) version with a rear-facing third seat in the "wayback" could also have been ordered, in the Dynamic 88 line.

A closer look at the rear cargo area, including the spare tire lid; on the three seat models, the spare was located on the passenger side, hidden by a panel located behind the rear wheel well. Finally, a view of the spare tire lid raised, featuring the original jack instruction sticker. Jim took time to repaint all the trim pieces, and other exposed areas such as this, to make things much more presentable.

Again, more pictures to come. Just wanted to thank Jim for his diligent efforts in making the wagon several notches above and beyond what it was, upon my initial purchase of it 5 1/2 years ago.

    Saturday's work--part 1

Cargo Area Panels Completed and Installed on Wagon

With temperatures in the upper 50s, and sunny spring skies finally making an appearance, the mission was made and accomplished by Impala Jim to get the newly "vinoleumized" cargo area panels back into the wagon, and does it look great!

A couple of opening shots, the first with the panels in and the rear seat down, showing the new "vinoleum" material on each of the several panels that comprise the full cargo area.

This next picture illustrates the completed work with the rear seat up; my wagon is a two-seat model, though they could be ordered with a rear-facing third seat.

The complete set of panels (with the exception of the rear of the back seat) lined up and ready to be installed.

Before re-installing the rear seat, Jim removed the rear cushion from the seat, and sprayed the underside springs with rust neutralizer and a coat of Eastwood Spray Gray for protection for the wagon's next fifty years...

Getting there--Jim screwing in the back seat hinge flap to the middle cargo area panel. As the panels were initially removed from back to front; the reverse process was in order for putting them back into the wagon

    Saturday's work--Part 2

In progress, the rear seat (folded down) and hinge, connected to the middle cargo area panel. Working our way back...

A view from the rear, with the rear seat up. The middle hinge is lifted in order to raise the seat, then subsequently "disappears" when the seat is in the up position.

Jim is installing the driver's side rear panel, which sits adjacent to the spare tire lid, to be installed

After installing both rear panel sides, Jim then reinstalled the side accent pieces, trim that run from the rear of the wagon on both sides, along the edge of the side wheelwell panel from stem to stern.

Jim's silhouette is reflected upon the spare tire lid after completion; must have been thinking "damn, I'm good at this!" And he is...:thumbs2:

I always thought the '61 and '62 Olds wagons were very stylish, and it's just such a thrill to see all of the meticulous work go into this car! I can appreciate what some owners do with rejuvenating and refreshing, but this is just the best it ever gets!
