Amar: Keep up the great work. The Plymouth is looking wonderful. Any really good paint and body man should be able to mix up paint to match the original closely enough. That colour does tend to be quite stable so it shouldn't be that difficult to come very close indeed. The majority of the paint looks so nice it would almost be a shame to paint the entire car. Beautiful piece of history you have there.

My local Napa paint shop guy borrowed my gas cap lid overnight last night and was able to get me a 4oz. sample the looks very close. I will re-do driver side inner fender under the battery tray this weekend and take pics. hopefully this color is close enough to use for the fenders and hood. I think it's probably going to be good enough for the engine bay and door jambs etc...

By matching it to the gas flap, if he did the inside colour, you will find the colour more closely matched to original, not what the colour has become on the exterior panels. There are computer scanners that will allow a perfect match to what the paint is now. A good paint man should also be able to match the shine factor and finish when applying the new paint, too. Ma's 1990 Volvo is light blue, and the shop managed to match colour and finish perfectly last year when a touch up was required. In fact, over the last 22 years, about half of the car has been repainted, and you can't tell what is original, what is 15 years old, and what was done last year.

He used the outside of the flap but he first used a cutting cream and buffed it out to get a clean sample. Then he was nice enough to give me the rest of the bottle of the cream (huge bottle, easily enough to do the whole car maybe twice). So if I have time this weekend, I will break out my polisher and give it a shot. that will give me a good idea of what the car will look like and hoprfully it matches closely and then we can use that formulation for future paint.

The paint came out pretty close... We also used the cutting cream he gave us and polished, clayed and waxed the car today. She is really starting to look like she used to back in her hay day :)

Hey guys, here are some updated pics... sorry I haven't posted in a while but we did take a little brake from the wagon to get my younger son't project car rolling along in the last year.

We found a better than ours front right fender with the same color and wood grain so we opted for that one, we fixed our grill with a lot of JB Weld and then repainted it, and then we replaced the front bumper with a NOS replacement.

The donor fender is also dented; is there a reason you didn't remove them before installing it? Other than that, it looks good!

Edit: I just noticed the hood and left fender are also dented; are there plans to take care of those? Or will you consider your wagon like an older leather bag: where the flaws are proof of its usefulness?

What a "rebirth" Amar. You must be so proud; it certainly doesn't look, (or I imagine, run), like the wagon you first brought home. Excellent job, to say the least. As everybody on the forum knows, I'm not a huge fan of anything but the factory stock original wheel and tire treatment, but I have to say, your choice really dresses it up and does, admittedly, look better than the whitewalls and wheel covers. You're definitely making some very nice choices.

yes... you are right, the main goal at this point was to get the front end cleaned up with the new bumper, fix the grill and have the headlights pointing properly. The crunch in the old fender was so bad it would have cost too much to fix. This gave us the option of getting the car back to normal look with the survivor look. I like the "old leather bag" analogy.

This is a long term project to enjoy while we work on it. For now, we are happy with the way it looks and enjoy taking it to cruise ins and car shows.

not too bad... he actually has a blue 71 with a hood and tail gate. The hood on the one like mine as damage on the front. the tail gate is pretty good. Both cars rear bumpers have some bends in them.

Scroll down on this page and you should be able to see both wagons.

Thanks! the main reason I wanted the tire/wheel package was for the safety and performance with this big car on the road. They really did help a lot. But I'm with you... Original is original. That's why we are trying very hard not to make any changes that can't be reverted back easily. I have saved the hubcaps and wheels.

tailgates interchange from 71 to 78, both dodge and plymouth. Doors too. How is this guys prices? is he reasonable, or are his parts made of gold? Reverse lenses from 71 to 74 interchange too.

he definitely likes to get a premium for his parts... if you are not in a rush, might want to keep looking. I paid $200 for the dented fender. But I wanted that specific fender as the paint and the wood grain were a perfect match and that lets me keep the car original for a bit longer until I do some sort of body restoration and respray.

What color is your car or do you care? There is a guy out in west georgia who has a custom out in his field with a tail gate but I don't know if he's willing to sell it yet as he uses the wagon for storage. He did sell me his fender and hood. The fender turned out to be more rust than I wanted to deal with and the hood has a some rust on the underside and a small hole with a good bit of the front right side of it with filler and primer. But it was my color so I bought it. not sure if I will ever use it or try to fix mine.

I'll keep an eye out for you.
