When hubby removed the dining room window to put in a larger one, he discovered that the boards were, as you say actual 2x4. We have also found a few square nails as well. The interior walls are also true 2x4 and are angled braced. Finding this old stuff is really fun. I still find it hard to believe that the house is really that old...but it is.
a complete news paper from 1958, complete with a black and white cartoon rambler wagon ad. Me too! Me to! pweeze!
I also found in a wall, an empty pint bottle of Rock & Rye Compound. Not sure what it was, but it's guaranteed under the national pure food and drugs act, June 30th 1906
It was rye whiskey, which is government-guaranteed a certain percentage of rye grains in its distillation.
So it turns out this summer is, so far, just as busy as last summer. The difference is we are starting to come to the end of some of our cottage projects. So I thought I'd post a few before and after pics... This is the upstairs hallway. Sorry for the sideways pics. We purchased a new awning to help shade the sun. During the summer months the sun shines on the front all day. It has been very useful in helping to keep the porch cool. We're hoping to put stairs around two sides of the deck. It's getting there.
