That little jigsaw is a trooper. I drilled starter holes with the battery drill big enough to get the sawbade in, then I used one of my U-type Bosch Highspeed Steel blades and it just chugged along nicely. I used it on 3 sides and sheared off the rest with aircraft snips. Left lots of room for a good braze to mine. The old brake weldnut broke off one one bolt so I had to chop off the bolt and return it to the junkyard tomorrow, when I go and remove the AC condenser. The blade is in good shape too. I think the slower speed does help it stay cooler and sharp. The next time you shop for blades and drills you'll find that inflation has hit them too. Buy good quality and save money.
Rain this afternoon and a balmy high of 10C (50F). So I'm off to get the AC condenser, and more weatherstripping. Ciao! Then I've got a package to send to sunny, hot Ridgecrest, CA.!
Yup, it's supposed to be back up in the 100's this week. We are in a period of a 45-50 degree spread in daily temperatures. Mid to high 50's at night....100+ in the afternoon.
More rain today and all night. Its drizzling up here, now, but it should be about 3/4" by tomorrow morning, then warm (68F) sunshine for almost a whole week... if they don't look out the window.
Hasn't rained except for a drizzle, but it looks ugly out there. Winds to 45 KMH and dark gray. Forecast still calls for up to 3/4". The rest of this week looks summery. Then down, down, down. Full Moon tonite. Get the garlic.
What a great day! I rebuilt the 1981 Capri carb last week and needed a solid, dry day to install it and tune it. What a difference! Smooth idle, nice high vacuum, no vapour, no black soot. Just sweet. You look at the key and it starts! Very pleased. Probably have to reset the timing, but I have to change the heater core tomorrow and a bunch of other stuff, while the dash is out. AND! I swapped from 2-eyed Fairmont to 4-eyed Zephyr. Wow! Before: After:
Too nice to stay inside, so I'm out on my playground - lots to do. Install new weather strips, new solenoid, peel out the dash, and replace the heater core, which means the console too, so I'll install the chunk of tranny tunnel that I got from the Capri last week to firm it up. New speakers all around. New watershields in the door panels. I got a pair of Lincoln Door speaker covers with the angular mount and the AMP and the AMP switch (one rare piece to find for the Fox cars) and a rear deck panel from a 1989 Lincoln Town Car with the angular raised speaker 'bumps' for the rear speakers. Gonna fit and sound AWESOME! The whole week is sunny and warm, so I'll pop in early morning and late evening with updates. Lots to do.
So how does a Town Car parcel shelf panel adapt to a Fairmont wagon? ...Or are you only talking about using the angled speaker housings?
Andy just came over and saw it. Totally different car, he said. All halogen lights too. There's one other zephyr grille there. Thinking about Hideaway panels. KRASH: I got two versions. A 1985 Lincoln with the nice slanted speaker grilles for Premium Sound, and the 1989 back panel with elevated segments. My idea is to make some sheetmetal mounts behind the plastic cargo cover, slanting them at 30 degrees toward the front, and since the backpanel is carpeted, it won't show scuff marks from loading/unloading. I could use the 1989 snap-in grilles or the nice 1985 grilles to emphazie the angle. The 1989, actually had the sheetmetal back panel slanted by 30 degrees to get the sound forward, so it makes sense to copy a good idea. The thing is the stock Fairmont speakers sit behind the wheel humps, so any long stuff will never touch the speakers. I'll get cleaner sound too, because the 1989 came with specially moulded domed baffles. Then I scooped the 1985 angular door speaker spacers and speaker covers to have the mid-range speakers point upward by about 15 degrees, and 2 new 3.5" (Kickers brand) speakers for the dash. The Premium Sound amplifier only puts out an extra 12.5 Watts per rear speaker channel (25 total), for better base/mid-range. I still want to use Q-Tips to clean my ears. not melt the wax. Just cleaner, more audible and distinct sound. I already did the extra sound deadener with this in mind, and now that I have the bits and pieces, its time to enjoy the investment.
The Capri heater core leaks, so I removed the one from my Mexican AC/Heater box - perfect condition. Tested, cleaned, ready to go in. I stopped at removing the dashpad and steering wheel. Too dark without light. Even a floodlight wouldn't do, because of the shadows. Sunrise and Normy on the job at 7:20 AM tomorrow, starting off at a balmy 65 F degrees! And the Sun sets at 7:20 PM tomorrow.
